  1. Domain IVCompetency 40Earth and Space Science The teacher understands the role of energy in weather and climate.

  2. Weather The elements of weather include interactions between wind, water (precipitation), wind speed and direction, air pressure, humidity, and temperature.

  3. Climate Climate is the weather conditions in an area on a continuous, seasonal basis. Climate is more complex and can be measured by the average variety of weather conditions.

  4. Predicting Weather Weather can be predicted by tracking weather patterns using maps and charts. These maps have special symbols that indicate warm and cold air masses, air pressure, and relative humidity in a region.

  5. The Earth’s Surface and Position as a Factor in Weather and Climate The earth’s surface is primarily water, and bodies of water affect the weather and climate of an area. • Water – High specific heat • Large Lakes – Create “lake effect” • Air – Holds water • Precipitation – Goes from air masses

  6. Which of the following statements are true? A.The earth’s average temperature has Increased since the late 1800’s when people started burning a lot of coals, oil, and natural gas. B.
