  10. Development of mobile networks First-generation (1G): Analog and data transmission via modemsSecond-generation (2G): the current generation - mobile networks with digital circuit-switched connections for voice and data, only low-speed data 2.5-generation (2.5G): technologies such as GPRS support packet-switched medium-speed data, providing a much-improved application platform with reduced latency, asynchronous applications and the potential for “always on” applications with data charged on a per-packet basis rather than on a connection-time basis.Third-generation (3G): to be deployed in 2002 and offer higher data rates(realistically around 100 Kbps to 300 Kbps), sufficient for more data-intensive and multimedia applications; core of a 3G network likely to be IP-based.Fourth-generation (4G): still an ill-defined concept; likely to involve efficiency improvements and ubiquitous use of IP for voice and data.
