  1. Determination of Phosphorus Volatility from Lubricant Sequence TestsPresentation for ASTM ESCITAugust 8, 2006

  2. Phosphorus VolatilitySummary and Recommendations (5-4-06) • Can be determined using conventional UOA [ neglecting P consumed in anti-wear films and deposits ] • Sequence VIB appears to show “reasonable” scale • Possibilities for “multitasking” of a GF5 engine test to also yield measures of P volatility should be investigated • Analogous to IIIGA and T10A • Not as an extra P/F criterion • Goal is efficient utilization of data

  3. Bulk Oil Temperatures

  4. “Multitasking” of a sequence testIssues • Discrimination • Ability to distinguish finished oils with “good” versus “poor” performance • Industry reference oils needed • Precision • Calibration and Limits • Relative to 120,000 miles EPA durability schedule? • For which engine? • Rules for BOI and VGRA • Handle as “Technology Approval” rather than qualification of all products and grades

  5. ZDDP Structure-Performance • Factors which reduce P volatility tend to compromise anti-wear performance • P retention is a finished oil issue. Any new specification could lead to new formulation approaches • Chemistry and dosage of the ZDDP system • Detergent system • Dispersant system • Friction modifier system • Antioxidant system

  6. Next Steps • Sequence test data are needed for reference oils • IIIG/IIIH • VIB/VID
