This study explores how Italian undergraduate students utilize epistemic modality in their argumentative writing. Focusing on hedging and boosting strategies, the research highlights the students' ability to express cautiousness or confidence in their propositions. By analyzing a corpus of 53,470 words from 42 female and 8 male B2/C1 level learners, the study reveals significant findings about their writing styles, communicative strategies, and the interplay between linguistic elements and reader reception. Recommendations for teaching practices to enhance learners' writing are also discussed.

Both propositional and metadiscoursal elements occur together. …...each element expressing its own ‘content’: one concerned with the world, and the other with the text and its reception.’ (Hyland,2004, bold added)
