  1. The Hobbit Chapter 13 – Not at Home

  2. Trapped by Smaug! • Bilbo and the dwarves remain trapped in the cave after Smaug has smashed the side of the mountain causing the secret entrance to collapse.

  3. Sneaking into the cave… • After an agonizing wait (in fear of Smaug) Bilbo decides to venture ahead into the cave (since he’s done it twice before by this point) and determine whether or not the dragon has returned. • After a short while, he calls out to the dwarves that Smaug has left and that he is nowhere to be found in the mountain.

  4. The Arkenstone and Mithril… • However, before the dwarves arrive in the cave, Bilbo finds The Arkenstone. Recalling Thorin’s promise that he can have his choosing of the treasure, he takes this for himself without the knowledge of the dwarves. • Additionally, Bilbo is given the magical dwarf armor known as Mithril. (Note that this is the armor that saves Frodo from the cave troll in the mines of Moria during The Fellowship of the Ring!)

  5. Where, oh where, could that dragon be? • Eventually, the dwarves and Bilbo decide to exit the cave in case Smaug should decide to return. • They leave, following the River Running to an old guard post where they look and wonder where the dragon could have gone…
