  1. The Hobbit Chapter 9 Barrels out of bond BY: Simran and Manpreet

  2. Plot Bilbo slipped on the Gollum’s ring and managed not to get caught. He followed the others, invisible. The dwarves were the wood-elves prisoners unless they told the elf-king why they were in Mirkwood. Bilbo finds another entrance to the cave and thought of a plan to help the dwarves escape. The wood-elves were unaware and helped the dwarves get out of prison. After the battle with the spiders, Bilbo and the dwarves continue on with their journey but became trapped by the wood-elves.

  3. Character Revelation Bilbo Baggins Before: Now: • Shy • Weak • Hatred for adventures • Useless • Reluctant • strong • brave • takes it upon himself to save the dwarves • willing to take the risk

  4. Literary Devices Simile • A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using like or as. “ he came up again spluttering and clinging to the wood like a rat…”Tolkien (184) This simile is when Bilbo is being compared to a rat in the water, and how it would react is almost like how Bilbo reacted.

  5. Simile “It was really empty, and floated light as a cork.” Tolkien (184) The barrel is being compared to the cork. “ up he crawled like a drowned rat…” Tolkien (185) Bilbo is being compared to a rat again.

  6. Onomatopoeia • A word that sounds like its meaning. “down in the water he fell, splash! Into the cold dark water with the barrel on top of him.” Splash is an onomatopoeia because when someone jumps/falls into the water the sound literally sounds like “Splash”

  7. Alliteration • a group of words that begin with the same sound. “ ...was the heady vintage of the great gardens of…” Tolkien (178) “… ragged clothes clinging to him cold and clammy.” Tolkien (187)

  8. Questions • After the battle with the spiders who did the dwarves and the hobbit get trapped by? • Why did Thorin tell the dwarves not to tell the elf king the reason why they were in Mirkwood? • Who helped the Dwarves get out of Prison?

  9. Thank you for watching.
