  2. Chapter Objectives • Compare the history of Israel to other groups we have studied • Identify major leaders and their accomplishments • Discuss the major changes that happened to Israel over a period of time • Analyze the beliefs of Judaism

  3. Bellringer • Name three important reasons why you think religion plays an important part in studying a group of people. Does religion matter when studying history? Explain your answer.

  4. Where is Israel? • It borders the Mediterranean Sea • Its between Mesopotamia

  5. What we know about the Israelites? : • They were monotheistic • Abraham is the father • Homeland is Canaan • Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, had 12 sons from which the 12 tribes existed

  6. What happened in Egypt? • they wonder into Egypt • held as slaves • Moses leads them out • Makes a covenant with God and God delivers the law

  7. What happened after Egypt • The Kingdom • Israelites conquer the tribes of Cannan • Saul is the first king • David the second, but greatest • Solomon built the great temple in Jerusalem • After his death, kingdom breaks up into Judah and Israel

  8. How did the Kingdom collapse? • Captivity • The Chaldeans conquer Judah, the Assyrian conquer Israel • The prophets predicted destruction and called for Israel to come together • While in captivity, the Israelites became Jews and wrote their history through the Bible

  13. History during and after Jesus • Zealots had a desire to overthrow the Romans • Jews kicked out of Jerusalem • Jews scatter into different areas of the world (Diaspora)

  14. Holidays and Celebrations • Hanukah is closely related to Christmas • Rosh Hashanah is the day of atonement • Barmitzva celebrates adolescence

  15. Other traditions and beliefs • Different groups: Orthodox and Hasidic • Doesn’t eat pork • Men wear yarmulkes over their head
