  6. Chronological Bible Discipleship Iva May and Dr. Stan May week thirty-five Lamentations/Jeremiah/ Ezekiel/2 Chronicles

  7. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin. Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithfulness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph). Exodus: God liberates Israel, and leads them to the Promised Land and shapes them into a nation holy to Himself. Conquest: Joshua, relying on God’s presence and power, leads Israel to possess and settle the Promised Land.

  8. Review Judges: Every man does what is right in his own eyes, and Israel falls into the sin cycle. Kingdom: Israel asks for a king and God raises up a succession of kings from Saul to Solomon who rule over a united Israel. Divided: Israel divides into the northern and southern kingdoms and each descends into rebellion and idolatry, inciting God’s judgment.

  9. Captivity Era • Beginning in 605 B.C. the armies of Babylon invaded Judah (S. Kingdom) • After a political rebellion, Nebuchad-nezzar, King of Babylon, lays siege to Jerusalem until it falls in 597 B.C. • Another 10,000 captives are deported back to the city of Babylon • Installs Zedekiah as king • Judah rebels again in 594 B.C. • In 588 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar responds to Zedekiah’s trea-son by again laying siege to Jerusalem • Jerusalem falls after 18 months, and the city is destroyed along with the temple; the remaining inhabitants are killed or captured and taken to Babylon

  10. Context Who is Satan? • The Bible gives little detail about him • Satan does not appear in the creation narrative • He appears in chapter three as a minor figure whose role and power are limited • He cannot force humans to obey him • He must resort to contradicting and dis-torting the God’s Word to deceive Eve • From that point on, the whole world falls under “the sway of the wicked one” (1 Jn 5:19)

  11. Context Who is Satan? • He doesn’t appear again until the opening scene of Job • Again, we see that he is limited in his power as he answers to God and seeks permission to test Job • God allows him to tempt King David to number Israel’s army (1 Chron 21:1) • Isaiah describes Satan’s fall from his high position in heaven (Is 14:12)

  12. Overview • Isaiah provides details and insights surrounding Satan’s downfall • He says that he will be “brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the pit.” (Is 14:16) • He exposes some of the motives behind Satan’s earthly activity • Ezekiel, an early exile in Babylon, is called by God to prophesy against Jerusalem to the people of Israel already in captivity • He also has a vision of the destruction of the King of Tyre • This description of the King of Tyrealso pictures the spiritual force behind his throne • These verses go beyond the human ruler to give a glimpse of the spiritual being known as Satan

  13. The influence that Satan has over the ruler of Tyre differs little from the strategy he uses against every man, leader and nation today. Key Truth

  14. Captivity Era Ezekiel 28 Isaiah 14 James 3 A King Overthrown The King of Pride The Ruler of Tyre The King of Tyre Satanic Rule Still Operates Today

  15. The King of Pride Isaiah 14:12-17

  16. The King of Pride • Powerful Leaders Often Become Proud and Self-important • Sennacherib, king of Assyria (and ruler of Babylon), is such a leader • Isaiah’s description of Sennacherib is thought to be a description of Lucifer • Who then is the Real King of Pride in this Prophecy? • Satan

  17. The King of Pride • The King of Pride Behind Sennacherib is Satan • He falls from heaven to the world(12) • Satan’s rebellion in heaven led to his eviction to earth • He is in a position to “have weakened the nations” • Five times Satan expresses his pride with the words, “I will” (13-14) • Self-exertion, self-promotion, and selfish ambition have no place in heaven • His defeat is certain(15) • He will “be thrust down to Sheol, to the lowest recesses of the pit.” • His destructive work has worldwide effect(16-17) • He “made the earth tremble” • He “shook kingdoms” • He “made the world like a wilderness” • And he “overthrew its cities”

  18. Discussion Isaiah began his prophecy talking about a man, the king of Babylon. He ends up describing the attributes and work of Lucifer. What does this tell us about how Satan is forced to exercise control in the world? What does this tell us about Satan’s power? Why has God allowed the devil this power?

  19. The Ruler of Tyre Ezekiel 28:1-10

  20. The Ruler of Tyre • The “Leader” of Tyre is a Man named Ethbaal III (1) • The daughter of Ethball I was Jezebel • Ethbaal III is a Leader with a Messianic Complex (2, 6, 9) • Views himself as god and God takes note • Ethbaal considers himself wiser than Daniel • Daniel’s wisdom was well known, and his posi-tion in the Babylonian government elevated • EthbaalIII is a Leader whose Enemy is God (6-10) • Pride makes an enemy of God • God promises Ethbaal that he will soon be demoted and destroyed

  21. The King of Tyre Ezekiel 28:11-19

  22. The King of Tyre • The “King” of Tyre is a Spirit Being Whose Description Fits that of Satan • His Position (13-14) • He is a created being • He was one of the inner circle of cherubs that guarded the throne • His existence predates man • He roamed freely on God’s holy mountain • His Perfection (12b, 15a) • His wisdom and form demonstrated perfection • He was righteous in everything he did at all times

  23. The King of Tyre • His Pride (15b, 16a, 17a) • He becomes proud • He is filled with violence (cruel injustice) • He becomes enamored with his own beauty • His Punishment (16b, 17b) • God casts him out of the mountain • Removed from his position as covering cherub • Cast to the ground • His power is limited • He now defiles whatever his touches • His own burning pride will be his destruction • Both the Leader of Tyre and the King of Tyre will Eventually see Destruction(19)

  24. Discussion Who is the Leader (Ruler) of Tyre? EthbaalIII Who is the King of Tyre? Satan Who is running the show? Does this mean that Ethbaal III had no choice but to be manipulated by Satan? From the description in Ezekiel 28 and the picture of Satan’s end in The Revelation, what can we see as the stages of Satan’s fall? Thrown down from the mountain of God Thrown from heaven to earth Thrown from earth into the lake of fire (Rev 20:10)

  25. Satanic rule still operates today James 3:14-16

  26. Satanic Rule today • James Defines the Wisdom from which Ethbaal and other Self-Important Leaders Operate • It is a wisdom that originates from Satan • “…bitter jealousy and selfish ambi-tion...The wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly natural, and demonic.” (14-15) • “…the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19b) • Leaders with a Messianic complex bear the scent of hell itself • They reinforce the evil one’s influence • They reflect his heart

  27. Discussion What does the Bible teach about Satan’s influence on the world today? How does this influence affect Christians? “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you than he who is in the world.” (1 Jn 4:4) How is Satan’s influence limited? He cannot control people directly He cannot create or destroy by his own power He cannot be in more than one place at a time He cannot test God’s people without God’s permission The best Satan can do is to use his spiritual forces of wickedness to mani-pulate prideful people to influence the world How are we to respond to the world, knowing that things of the world are under the influence of Satan?

  28. Conclusions • Satan targets leaders and people of influence, appeals to their pride, and tempts them to live independently of God. • The enemy loves to tempt man to believe that he can disregard God’s Word and trust his own ability to navigate through life in-dependently of God. • Rebellion and unbelief originate from two sources: the sinful and proud heart of man, and the deceptive tactics of Satan. • The wise leader walks in humility; the foolish leader falls into the snare of Satan when he uses his leadership position to exalt himself instead of serving others. • Satan’s greatest weapon is deception and He distorts God’s Word and misrepresents His character. Therefore, we must know and appropriate God’s Word as our only sure defense.

  29. Bible TRIViA QUIZ The Books of Ezekiel & Daniel(2pts) • Ezekiel prophesied that at some point in Israel’s future, God would “remove the heart of _____ from your flesh and give you a heart of ______”? • “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26) • What was the name of the chief prince of Meschech and Tubal, in the land of Magog? • “And the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him.” (Ezekiel 38:1-2) • Who was driven out to graze like cattle when he said, “Is this not the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence by my might power and for the glory of my majesty?” • “All this happened to Nebuchadnezzar the king…he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon…said, ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’.” (Daniel 4:28-29)

  30. BONUS ROUND Bonus Questions (4pts) • When God destroys the army of Gog as they are invading Israel, how many years worth of fuel will their weapons provide? • “Then those who inhabit the cities of Israel will go out and make fires with the weapons and burn them…and for seven years they will make fires of them. They will not…gather firewood from the for-ests, for they will make fires with the weapons.” (Ezekiel 39:9-10) • How many months will the people of Israel spend burying the dead from Gog’s army? • “For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.” (Ezekiel 39:12)
