Important Vocabulary
  • Norm-referenced: a grade or score determined as compared to other students
  • Criterion-referenced: a grade or score determined based on student performance as compared to established criteria (i.e. standards)
  • A rubric is not a grading scale; it is a way to conduct criterion-referenced scoring of student work

Marks = the number or “score” earned by individual students on a test or performance task

Grades = the number (or letter) reported at the end of a period of time as a summary statement of student performance.
