The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) recently launched an exercise on a theme of Road and Tyre Safety. Based on the theme of safer India, this exercise is done by engaging school students. An occasion was held at TDI International School at Kundli Sonepat (Haryana) gave a stage to around 250 students from various schools to release their potential by taking part in a colouring competition on the topic of street security. It was a day-long event. Along with the children who took part in the competition, the parents also assembled there to know about the Tyre safety through the Tyre safety booklets distributed there. The Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee (ITTAC) supported ATMA in this school project. Mr Rajiv Budhraja, Director General of ATMA, commented on this by saying, "Children can be instrumental in spreading awareness on road safety in the society. Children travelling with families can insist on road safety in a way that no regulation can match.” He also said,“United Nations is

  2. also of the view that children in India can help in improving road safety by spreading awareness on the same." ATMA has launched an animation movie in which a family is seen going on an excursion. A careful spouse has the vehicle checked altogether however becomes speechless when the child inquires as to whether the tyres were checked too since the tyre is an important segment. Mr Budhraja further added, "Catch them young' should be the motto. The children need to be sensitised on road safety from a young age so that they realize that they have a responsibility for the safety of themselves and their families." The occasion saw support of a few school principals from Sonepat other than Principal of TDI International School Mr Harender Sharma who managed the school movement. ATMA individuals which have been effectively taking part in Tire Safety crusades incorporate Apollo Tires, Birla Tires, Bridgestone India, CEAT, Continental India, Goodyear India, JK Tyre and Industries, Michelin, MRF, TVS Tires and Yokohama. ATMA is among the most dynamic national industry bodies in the nation speaking to Rs. 57000 crore (US$ 8bn) car tire industry. Eleven big tyre organizations including a blend of Indian and International tire majors and speaking to over 95% of the creation of tires in India are individuals from the Association. Mr Akshay Taneja, Vice Chairman of TDI International School spoke in the event and said, "Spreading awareness on road safety needs to be at the top of the agenda for every corporate in India. We are privileged to join hands with national industry bodies ATMA and ITTAC in this laudable cause. The children participated in Road safety colouring activity with great enthusiasm." This initiative by ATMA is a great way to work towards spreading road and tyre safety awareness among adults as well towards children. Children should know about road safety rules since childhood. This initiative can help minimise accidents in the country that happen due to lack of knowledge.
