P: Professional- Because it is focused on professional competence
D: Development- Because its goal is to improve personal performance and enhance career progression.
5. Continuing Professional Development Continuing Professional Development is a requirement of the NMC
Nurses must maintain their registration by meeting the Post Registration Education and Practice (PREP) standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC
There are two PREP standards.
1) PREP CPD requires the nurse to undertake 35 hours of learning activity relevant to their practice.

11. Achieving CPD There are many ways in which you can improve your skills and increase your knowledge in practice that will contribute to CPD
These include
Post Registration Education- University courses eg OU, RCN.
Attending conferences
Training – On the job training, in-house training courses, departmental training.
Secondments- short transfer to another department or organisation
Shadowing, covering colleagues, acting up into a senior role.

Mentoring
Reflective practice -acquisition of extended skills.
Reading professional Journals eg Nursing Standard.

Working across boundaries eg link nurse.

14. Creating a Portfolio of Professional Development Nurses are required by the NMC to maintain a Portfolio of their learning activities that are relevant to their practice.
Nurses need to recognise opportunities for recording evidence of learning.
A Portfolio must show evidence of reflection on practice or reflection of an article that you have read.
It must show that you recognise your learning needs and any gaps that exist in your knowledge and skills - what you need to know or do to enhance your practice. What is your professional development needs.

16. Benefits of having a portfolio Your Portfolio is a visual and tangible way in which you can introduce yourself to interviewers and potential employers, If you are seeking opportunities to join committees, internal promotion or if you are changing your career.
Your Portfolio can be used as evidence at your performance review/ appraisal.
Your portfolio is also useful when preparing for external accreditation eg MA, NVQ, Post Grad Cert.

The RCN provides an on line service where you can maintain a portfolio. It allows you to change or update documents
You can also manage your portfolio on your personal computer

21. Using Reflective Practice to Build your Portfolio When building a Portfolio you must consider how easy it would be to store and retrieve the materials
Your portfolio must contain evidence of your recent achievements in relation to your experiences.
Reflective Practice is one way in which you can evidence your learning and development in practice.
Quality of care, personal and professional growth and closing the gap between theory and practice are some of the benefits of reflective practice.
