  2. Essential Questions What factors create crises in various regions of the world? Do outside influences increase or decrease conflict? How do societies respond to crisis?

  3. Objectives Students will learn about the history and resources of Afghanistan. Students will learn about what countries were involved in Afghanistan’s many crisis's.

  4. THINK SHEET 1 minute timed writing Write everything you know about Afghanistan

  5. Facts • It is landlocked. • Population: 33.6 million • Life Expectancy: 44 male, 45 females • Languages: Persian, Pashtu, Turkic Languages

  6. Facts • 53% of the population lives below the poverty line • 80% of the labor force is involved in agriculture

  7. Afghanistan before 1978 Political boundaries did not match tribal boundaries. It was between 2 empires: British and Soviet Union, which never allowed the other to rule Afghanistan The country was never pushed through modernization with regards to communications, administration, education, and health care.

  8. Afghanistan before 1978 • 4 major cities: • Kabul (capital) in the east • Kandahar in the south • Heart in the west • Mazar-i-Sharif in the north • 4 main ethnic groups: • Pashtuns • Tajiks • Uzbeks • Hazaras • One main religion: Islam • Majority Sunni • Minority Shi’a
