  2. What is Technology? • The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. • A scientific or industrial process, invention, method, or the like.

  3. Background- What is Medicine? • Any substance or substances used in treating disease or illness. • The art or science of restoring or preserving health or due physical condition, as by means of drugs, surgical operations or appliances, or manipulations: often divided into medicine proper, surgery, and obstetrics.

  4. Information • Prior to medical advancements, many people died from over exposure of the elements and the unstoppable spreading of contagious diseases. • Out of this technological advancement category societies gleaned the extension of life which both allowed highly educated individuals to develop and create medical technological advancements. • New diseases emerged and new cures evolved.

  5. Processing Ideas • Prevention: Genetic testing has played in identifying diseases passed on from generation to generation. Doctors can get an early start on what to look for in a patient. • Testing:Regular blood tests and lab work can reveal anything from a lack of iron in your blood to certain types of cancers, diabetes and possible heart conditions. These simple tests can be a life saver with early detection. • Early detection: With the use of x-rays, MRI's and Cat Scans doctors are able to have an "inside" look at your body and what diseases or ailments may be hiding within. • Surgery:Advances in this field have transformed surgery as a "risky art" into a scientific discipline capable of treating many diseases and conditions. • Treatment:There seems to be a medication for almost every ailment these days and it wouldn't be possible without modern day technology.

  6. Impact on Society • Rapidly changing medical technology and availability of high technology diagnostic and therapeutic equipment together with changing practice pattern of doctors has revolutionized the way health care is being delivered today. • Today's medical technology is more advanced, more effective, and in many cases, more costly than ever before. Now there is an ever increasing demand for high technology diagnostic and therapeutic healthcare facilities and their availability may come into conflict with medical necessity, social justice and cost effectiveness. • There is increasing pressure on health care resources.
