  2. What a thesis statement should do? The thesis statement is a single statement that states the main idea of your paper. You will support this thesis with a combination of your own ideas textual evidence from the text. As you draft your paper, your thesis statement will probably change. At this point in the writing process, it (thesis statement) gives your ideas focus and enables you to organize them into an outline.

  3. Please write your thesis statement • I will collect your thesis statement. It may change over time of course if you find new facts in your research. • Example: Ballet can help socially awkward teens grow comfortable with the society around them.

  4. Topic Sentences • For each paragraph, I need to support my thesis in DIFFERENT ways. • Paragraph 1 (Intro) • 1. Hook to grab the read • 2. Basic info. about the topic. Interesting thoughts. • 3. The thesis.

  5. Example • High leaps across the floor. Pointed feet brushing to the beat of 3/4 time. Hair buns with pretty pink bows wrapped around. Chins up and shoulders down. This is the world for the graceful, talented, and brave few committed to a life where retirement comes before middle age. But, is this the world for severely shy teenagers who can barely walk down a hall without slouching their shoulders and looking up to greet someone and say hello? While it may seem fantastical, this dance form, with all its rigidity, and high level of requirements may be the cure. Ballet can help socially awkward teens grow comfortable with the society around them.

  6. Body paragraphs • After paragraph one (Intro and Thesis) • BODY PARAGRAPHS • 1. Topic sentence 1 – Ballet helps teenagers cope with people who seem more abrupt or outgoing than themselves. Explain why – Strict teachers who are not always “nice,” but get the best results out of the dancers. Furthermore, the most abrupt people are often also insecure. In the ballet world, teachers are consistently letting people in to their past, revealing their fears and inner demons. As a result, teens begin to see more easily than in regular school, that the ones they fear may be more similar to them than they think. (Use quotes / personal experience) • Topic Sentence 2 – Teenagers understand through practicing this dance form that even when situations are uncomfortable, one should not run away from them. Explain why – Sometimes one bleeds in point shoes and has terrible aches and pains, but every day the quality of their dancing gets better. This shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel for uncomfortable situations. (tie it into interacting with human beings) (Use quotes / personal experience)

  7. Body Paragraphs • Have at least 3 body paragraphs. • In a separate paragraph tell me in a sentence or two the counterargument and then refute it. • Have a conclusion that wraps it all up with a good final sentence.

  8. Outline • Homework - Please give me an outline by Friday.
