  3. APS Instrumental Music Program Grades 4 - 12 • Elementary School (Grades 4 – 5) • Middle School (Grades 6 – 8) • High School (Grades 9 – 12)

Elementary School Band & Orchestra • First Elective • One 30-45 minute class per week • Class structure varies per school—may be pull out or designated time • Minimum of 2 concerts per year • Opportunity to audition for County Wide Ensembles (Arlington Jr. Honors Band & Orchestra) • Eligible for District Solo & Ensemble Festival

  5. APS Instrumental Music Program Grades 4 - 12 • Elementary School (Grades 4 – 5) • Middle School (Grades 6 – 8) • High School (Grades 9 – 12)

  6. Middle School Band & Orchestra • Daily class (45 min x 5 days per week) • County- and District-level Honor Ensembles and Festivals • Band and Orchestra Trips • One-day trips to competitions at theme parks (Hersheypark, Busch Gardens, etc.) • Ensemble Opportunities • Jazz Band, Pep Band, etc.

High School Band & Orchestra • Scheduled class (daily or on block schedule) • Additional curricular performing ensembles • Marching Band, Arlington Youth Symphony • County, District, and Regional Honor Ensembles and Festivals • All-Virginia Band and Orchestra • APS Apprentice Program • Governor’s School • Extended tours to such places as New York, Chicago, Boston, Orlando

  9. Benefits of Instrumental Music • Fun and Fellowship – a sense of place • Increases Academic Performance & Focus • Encourages Disciplined Study • Provides Opportunity For College • Team Building And Cooperation • Leadership Development

Selecting An Instrument • The most important thing is that the student is in the band or orchestra, not which instrument they play • Often, the instrument “chooses” the child—be open to trying instruments you had never considered before! • There are no “male” or “female” instruments • Instrument fit (size) is important for string fit, but students will “grow into” band instruments

  11. Instrumentation • Your school band or orchestra is a team—and we need players at all of the positions!

  14. String Orchestra Instrumentation • 60 Orchestra Members Total • 30 Violins (50%) • 16 Violin I, 14 Violin II • 12 Violas (20%) • 10 Violoncellos (17%) • 8 Double basses (13%)

  15. Choosing a “Less Popular” Instrument • Instruments include: • ES Band: Horn, Trombone, Euphonium • MS Band: Oboe, Bassoon, Tuba • ES/MS Orchestra: Viola, Bass • Opportunities for Advancement • Honor Bands, Solos, Section leadership, Higher placement in MS/HS Bands

  16. How Do I Obtain An Instrument? • Rent To Own • Purchase an Instrument • School Instrument Rental

  17. Rent to Own Programs • Cost effective • Some have introductory rates or discounted used instrument rental options • You own the instrument at the end • Two companies here tonight • Foxes Music Company • Maley’s Music

  18. Purchasing an Instrument • Ask your teacher about recommended brands and models • Comparison shop for best value • Purchase new or used • Used may only mean returned after 2 weeks • “Value” Instruments • Cost more in the long run due to constant repair cost

  19. School Instrument Rental • All school instruments are “used” instruments • Limited number of instruments available—check with your teacher • Instruments rented first to those on Free/Reduced Lunch

Parental Support • Encourage your student to practice • Provide a quiet, distraction-free place • Listen to your student play! • Provide support & encouragement when the novelty wears off • Especially when the student gets frustrated and wants to quit • This is normal and can be overcome • Attend concerts and applaud loudly!
