WHAT ESCALATES THE PROBLEMS • Climate condition at macro level ------ El Nino prolonged drought season, rain comes in the end of November 2006. • Most fires are underground fires (some areas of fire prone districts consist of peatland) • Poverty : community does not have alternatives for land clearing

SUPPRESION EFFORTS • On the ground - Manggala agni fire brigades, armed forces and police, communities fire brigades and companies (Jun-Nov 2006) • Aerial suppression - Cloud seeding operation (Sept-Nov 2006) - Water bombing : helicopter (operated oct – Nov 2006) and Russian amphibious aeroplane BE 200 (Oct-Nov 2006)

  8. ON THE GROUND FIREFIGHTING Manggala Agni Fire Brigades suppressed fires in Indragiri Hilir District, Riau Province

  9. AERIAL SUPPRESSION The Be-200 can be configured as a freighter, a passenger aircraft or as an amphibious water drop fire-fighting aircraft. The aircraft has four retractable water scoops, capable of scooping 12t of water.

PROBLEMS FACED • SIZE OF AREA ON FIRE IS VERY BIG • UNDERGROUND FIRES IN PEATLAND • SOCIAL AND ECONOMY OF COMMUNITIES : SLASH AND BURN TECHNIQUE IS CHEAP, FAST AND IT IS BELIEVED TO MAKE LAND MORE FERTILE • LACK OF RESOURCES • MANPOWER : QUANTITY AND SKILL • FUNDING • EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY WHEN FIRES ARE ALREADY GROWING BIGGER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO SUPPRESS PREVENTIONS EFFORTS HAS TO GET MORE EMPHASIS
