  1. TIPS FOR PROJECT BASED LEARNING IN MATH CLASS An Academic presentation by Dr. Nancy Agens, Head, Technical Operations, Tutors India Group  www.tutorsindia.com Email: info@tutorsindia.com

  2. Today's Discussion OUTLINE In Brief Introduction Project Based Learning Research Steps Five Steps for Getting Started with PBL Conclusion Future Scope

  3. In Brief It is well known that the classroom learning in mathematics has a positive impact on the learning, and developmental skills of students. Project-based learning has become the growing demand in the education system in the rapidly developing society. Project-based learning mainly focuses on the progress of students by helping them to plan their actions on their own to obtain the skills and acquire essential knowledge. In the process of learning mathematics, the essential of project training was offered to students which aim at the development of their analytical and creative skills.

  4. Introduction In today’s generation students are greatly exposed to technologies. The surfacing of interactive classroom is a new educational system that has been recently carried out in almost all learning disciplines and studies. Interactive classroom promotes modern way of learning, and it allows lecturers to use different media for teaching. Project-based learning is one of the common and active learning methods accomplished in the mathematics subject that gives importance to student-centered learning.

  5. Project Based Learning Project-Based Learning (PBL) is the suitable method for creating appropriate learning media. PBL assists students to work together as a team to gain knowledge of the concepts to apply acquired knowledge, and to develop skills. PBL facilitates students to exhibit their skills to achieve their success, becoming a good teammate, encouraging students, developing their content knowledge, and exposing students to wide variety of skills and different styles of learning.

  6. Research Steps (1) initial observation of the concept, (5) dealing with fundamental question, (2) examining the appropriate literature, (6) planning the schedule, (3) preparing materials for learning, (7) monitoring and examining the result, (4) implementing project-based learning, (8) evaluating and analyzing the data.

  7. Five Steps for Getting Started with PBL 1. BASIC QUESTIONS: The project-based learningwas implemented by determining the basic questions. It is based on: 1. key material, 2. core competency, 3. fundamental skill, 4. Indicator for learning, and 5. plan of learning media. 2. PROJECT SCHEDULE: The second step in PBL is planning for the schedule. The schedule for learning is discussed in the class, as shown in the below table. Contd..

  8. Table 1: The Schedule of project-based learning Contd..

  9. 3. PLANNING THE PROJECT: Project planning was designed by forming and presenting the storyboard. Storyboard was created according to the following format: 1. key material, 2. core competency, 3. fundamental skill, 4. knowledge indicators, 5. tools and equipment, 6. predicted time for creating storyboard, 7. ways to utilize it, 8. predicted time of using media in the classroom, 9. outline of learning media. Contd..

  10. 4. MONITORING: => Monitoring is done by presenting the storyboard that has been designed and then the storyboard is revised, and the media is created. => The students make necessary alteration to the learning media through their presentation activities to avoid similarities with the media that are created by other students. => The statistical learning media facilitated in verifying the originality of the topic presented in the form of graphs. => One group of student used paper beam material as in figure 2a, while other group of student used the pipe as in figure 2b to create a bar chart. Contd..

  11. Figure 1: Bar Chart using Pipes Figure 2: Bar Chart using Paper Beam Contd..

  12. 5. EXAMINING AND EVALUATING RESULTS: => In the final stage, every student presents interactive learning media. => And the students can also form a variety of learning media. => The final step in the implementation of project-based learning is the evaluation of the task by exhibiting the learning media.

  13. Conclusion The five main approaches in project-based learning are: 1. Clarifying and sharing knowledge to others. 2. Effective classroom interactions among students improve understanding of students. 3. Providing opinion that help students to proceed further in learning. 4. Encouraging students to teach or convey their acquired knowledge to other students. 5. Making students feel that they can understand and learn any concept on their own.

  14. Future Scope Incorporating the fundamentals of mathematics in a well-thought curriculum using robotics will prompt the curiosity of the students and interest in learning. The integrated curriculum in Mathematics should renovate the students to be more aware and attentive while solving a problem and while doing any other creative tasks.
