  5. DEFINITIONS • SIX TYPES OF NUTRIENTS THE NUTRIENTS THAT YOU GET FROM FOOD ARE CALLED THE ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS. THE SIX CLASSES OF ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS ARE: • 1. CARBOHYDRATES • 2. FATS • 3. PROTEINS • 4. VITAMINS • 5. MINERALS • 6. WATER

  6. DEFINITIONS • WHAT IS A CARBOHYDRATE? A CARBOHYDRATE CONSISTS OF ONE SUGAR OR MULTIPLE SUGARS CHAINED TOGETHER. SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES CAN BE JUST ONE SUGAR OR TWO SUGARS JOINED TOGETHER. COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES CONSIST OF THREE OR MORE SUGARS JOINED TOGETHER. • SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES ARE FOUND IN SWEET FOODS SUCH AS TABLE SUGAR, HONEY, AND FRUITS. • STARCHES ARE COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES FOUND IN GRAINS AND VEGETABLES. • FIBER IS A COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATE THAT CANNOT BE DIGESTED.

  7. DEFINITIONS • WHAT IS FAT? FATS ARE NUTRIENTS THAT STORE ENERGY, CUSHION YOUR BODY, AND PROTECT NERVES. FATS ALSO HELP YOUR BODY PRODUCE HORMONES.

  8. DEFINITIONS • WHAT ARE PROTEINS? PROTEINS ARE NUTRIENTS THAT SUPPLY THE BODY WITH ENERGY FOR BUILDING, MAINTAINING, AND REPAIRING TISSUES AND CELLS. PROTEINS HELP THE BODY BREAK DOWN AND USE NUTRIENTS FOR ENERGY. PROTEINS ALSO HELP PROTECT THE BODY FROM GERMS THAT CAUSE SICKNESS.

FILL THE CELLS AND THE SPACES BETWEEN THE CELLS • 3. KEEP YOUR MOUTH AND EYES MOIST • 4. WASH AWAY THE WASTE PRODUCTS • 5. REGULATE YOUR BODY TEMPERATURE
