Learn about the characteristics of the universe, analyze star systems for potential life-supporting planets, and decipher elements using a spectrogram. Discover which stars could harbor life and complete a project report by tomorrow.
E N D
Warm-Up: 12/07/09 • Read the memo silently at your desk.
Today We will… • 8.13 (A)Describe the characteristics of the universe such as stars and galaxies. • Analyze which star systems are most likely to support planets with life. • Read spectrograms to determine which element(s) a star contains.
Using a Spectroscope • Please look at the light around you using the spectroscope.
Spectrogram • Tells us what elements are present. • Each element sends out light of unique wavelengths. • Fingerprint of elements • No to elements have the same fingerprint
Which Star System could Contain Life? • Figure out the elements that are on the Sun. • There is life in the Solar System. • Use the elements found on Aldebaran, Procyon, Sirius, and Betelgeuse to infer which star could support planets with life.
Homework: • Report back to your project manager. • 3 paragraphs • Due tomorrow
