  1. Walking Stories In words, describe Ron’s trip. Be creative, but remember to include details like: • Distance Ron traveled for each section of the trip • Time it took to travel that distance • Speed that Ron has traveled • Direction Ron is traveling with reference to his tree house. This is a math class after all! You have 10 minutes. Go! The following graph describes a trip that Ron the Raccoon took, starting from his tree house. Distance (km) Time (hour)

  2. Walking Stories • In section 1, Ron traveled 5 km in 5 hours at a constant speed in a direction away from his tree house. • In section 2, Ron stands still for 3 hours. • In section 3, Ron travels 5 km in 4 hours at a constant speed in a direction away from his tree house. • In section 4, Ron travels 10 km back to his tree house in 3 hours at a constant speed. Distance (km) Part of your story should have included the following:     Time (hour)

  3. Walking Stories How can we determine the speed that Ron was traveling just by looking at the graph? • We can do this by calculating velocity. Velocity is: Where d represents distance t represents time • The ∆ means “Change in”So, ∆d means “change in distance” (also called displacement)and ∆t means “change in time”

  4. Walking Stories What is the difference between velocity and speed? Velocity is a measure of the rate of change of displacement with respect to time. It can also indicate direction (by its sign). It is possible to have a negative velocity (What might this mean?)Speed describes how distance is changing for every unit of time. Speed does not indicate a direction. It does not make sense to have a negative speed. The units for speed and velocity are “distance units per unit of time”. In Ron’s case, it’s kilometres per hour (written km/h).

  5. Walking Stories For Section 1 Distance (km) Determine the velocity that Ron is travelling at each section below. • What displacement (∆d) occurs when Ron travels in Section 1 ?  • ∆d = 5 km   • What is the change in time (∆t) ?  • ∆t = 5 hours Time (hour) • The speed that Ron is traveling in Section 1 is 1 km/h away from his house.

  6. Walking Stories For Section 2 Distance (km) Determine the velocity that Ron is travelling at each section below. • What displacement (∆d) occurs when Ron travels in Section 2 ?  • ∆d = 0 km   • What is the change in time (∆t) ?  • ∆t = 3 hours Time (hour) • The speed that Ron is traveling in Section 2 is 0 km/h

  7. Walking Stories For Section 3 Distance (km) Determine the velocity that Ron is travelling at each section below. • What displacement (∆d) occurs when Ron travels in Section 3 ?  • ∆d = 5 km   • What is the change in time (∆t) ?  • ∆t = 4 hours Time (hour) • The speed that Ron is traveling in Section 3 is 1.25 km/h away from his house.

  8. Walking Stories For Section 4 Distance (km) Determine the velocity that Ron is travelling at each section below. • What displacement (∆d) occurs when Ron travels in Section 3 ?  • ∆d = -10 km Why negative?   • What is the change in time (∆t) ?  • ∆t = 3 hours • The speed that Ron is traveling in Section 4 is approximately 3.33 km/h back towards the house. Time (hour)

  9. Walking Stories • In section 1, Ron traveled 5 km in 5 hours at a constant speed of 5 km/h in a direction away from his tree house. • In section 2, Ron stands still for 3 hours. • In section 3, Ron travels 5 km in 4 hours at a constant speed of 1.25 km/h in a direction away from his tree house. • In section 4, Ron travels 10 km back to his tree house in 3 hours at a constant speed of approximately 3.33 km/h. Distance (km) We can adjust the details of our story to include the following:     Time (hour)

  10. Walking Stories The following graph describes distance of an ant from her ant hill as time passes. Write a story that would match this graph. Distance (m) Time (min)
