  1. Microscope Unit

  2. You will be responsible to know the following 2 vocabulary words- • Microscope- an instrument that makes objects appear larger 2. Biology- the study of living things

  3. You will be responsible to label all 14 parts of a typical microscope:

  4. You will be responsible to label all 14 parts of a typical microscope: 1. EYEPIECE 8. TUBE 2. COARSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB 9. NOSEPIECE 3. FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB 11. LOW POWER 4. ARM 10. HIGH POWER 5. CLIPS 6. TILTING JOINT 13. STAGE 7. BASE 12. DIAPHRAGM 14. LIGHT

  5. You will also be responsible to define all 14 parts of a microscope EYEPIECE- lens closest to the eye

  6. TUBE- gives distance needed between the eyepiece and objective lens ARM- Connects lenses to the base, used to carry microscope

  7. COARSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB- MOVES THE TUBE UP AND DOWN A LOT FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB- MOVES THE TUBE UP AND DOWN JUST ALITTLE

  8. NOSEPIECE-HOLDS OBJECTIVE LENSES AND LETS YOU CHANGE LENSES LIGHT- PUTS LIGHT INTO THE TUBE

  9. STAGE- PLATFORM FOR SLIDE TO REST DIAPHRAGM- DISK THAT LETS MORE OR LESS LIGHT PASS THROUGH IT

  10. CLIPS- HOLDS SLIDE IN PLACE ON THE STAGE TILTING JOINT- LETS YOU TILT THE MICROSCOPE

  11. LOW POWER- SHORTER OF THE TWO LENSES HIGH POWER- LONGER OF THE TWO LENSES

  12. BASE- HOLDS UP THE ENTIRE MICROSCOPE

  13. You will also be responsible to figure out total magnification of a microscope. To do this , you must MULTIPLY the the eyepiece and objective lens magnifications. You must also remember to put an “x” behind your answer to show that it is a power of magnification. Example: EyepieceObjective lens Total Magnification 10x 50x _______________ 5x 10x _______________ 20x 20x _______________

  14. If you pass the quiz you will be able to work with the microscopes in the lab. If you do not pass you will not be able to work with them. To work with the microscopes you will have to follow these directions when getting the microscopes out and putting them away at the end of the period

  15. You will have to take the microscopes out of the cabinets carefully and place them on your lab table. You will then take the dust cover off and place it on the side closest to the wall.

  16. You will un-wrap the cord and plug the microscope into the outlet toward the back of the lab table. The light should come on.

  17. If the light does not come on you must reset the outlet by pressing on the red reset button. The light should come on after you do this. If it still does not come on, get Mr. Meszaros to look at your microscope.

  18. Do not set the microscope near the edge of your table and do not use the tilting joint.
