Teak based Agroforestry System • Spacing 8 x 2 or 12 x 2 m • Rotation 20-25 years • Suitable Intercrops: Black gram , soybean , cotton, pigeon pea and sesame • Economics :Teak - First 50% thinning at 7th year Rs.6,000/ha, second (25%) thinning at 12th year Rs. 22,890 /ha, and final harvesting Rs. 26,00,000 /ha at 20-22 years Acacia mangiumbased system • Acacia mangiumplanted at a spacing of 8 x 2m under sub-humid climate • At the end of 12 years the system produced 4238 cft. /ha of timber and 30 t/ ha of firewood. • In the alleys sesame can be grown up to 5th year, arrowroot from 6th to 8th year and pineapple from 9th to 12th year.

Melia based Agroforestry System • Suitable for irrigated and rain fed conditions • Rotation period: 10 – 12 years depending on the purpose (pulp and plywood) • Marketable produce: 14 – 15 cubic feet • Leaves: Good source of fodder during lean period • Wood is not susceptible to insect attack • Timber peels well and produces clear veneer • Grown on bund, border and block plantations • Intercrops: Cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fodder and spices Dalbergia based Agroforestry System • Spacing: 4 m on boundary and 6x4 m in block plantations • Rotation Age: 20 – 25 years • Suitable intercrops: Wheat, paddy, soybean, mustard and pulses • Economics: Overall net income per hectare per year with Shisham + paddy Rs 41,000/ and Shisham + wheat Rs. 35,000/- under irrigated condition

Recommendations • Enhancing cost norms of SMAF and equating to existing agroforestry schemes in the States • Ratio of funding to be 50:25:25 instead of 40:20:20:20 • Synergy with PMKSY – PDMC • Need for extension workers and demo plots • Involving KVK, ATMA, ICAR, research units of States • Rationalization of plantation categories • Coverage of agro forestry under PMFBY • Loan facility

National Bamboo Mission www.nbm.nic.in • Synergy between Departments, R&D and entrepreneurs • Important role of M/o MSME and corresponding Dept in States • Backward forward linkages to be developed around the clusters identified • Stress on species of industrial use – superior planting material • Primary processing centres close to planting areas; Common Facility Centres • Focused plan for domestic production of quality agarbatti sticks - reduce imports • Planting Litsea and other spp for domestic production of jigget – reduce imports • Extension network to be strengthened for awareness and capacity building • Skill development of entrepreneurs • Increase use of bamboo in Govt. constructions Action Plans received from only 10 States
