  2. James Burke • Born: December 8, 1809 • Died: January 8, 1845 • From: St. Giles, London, England

  3. Childhood • James never attended school as a child • Hearing impaired from infancy • From a Family that was extremely poor Burke worked on the River Thames as a waterman before beginning his boxing career

  4. Burke enters history book • In 1833, Burke fought Simon Byrne, a man that was much bigger than him. Burke fought skillfully and beat him, hurting him so badly in the process that just three days later, Byrne died. Burke entered the history books as the first boxer involved in a fight that resulted in a death.

  5. Education Burk went to a deaf church where he learned to fingerspell and write. He learned to speak Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

  6. Death Burke died on January 8, 1845 from a bad case of tuberculoses. Burke was put into Ring Magazine’s boxing hall of fame in 1966.
