  1. Download Tiger Streets for a county

  2. GO TO: www.GeographyNetwork.com

  3. Click Data tab

  4. Click Downloadable Data

  5. Scroll down and click Census 2000

  6. Click Preview and Download

  7. Click California

  8. Select Line Features – Roads and then click Submit Selection

  9. Scroll down and check San Bernardino county (Or the one you need)

  10. Scroll down and click Proceed to Download

  11. Click Download File

  12. Save to file, Click Save

  13. Navigate to the c:\gistutorial folder and Click Save

  14. Click Open Folder

  15. Double click the ZIP file to open it You may have to Extract the files WinZIP

  16. Select the two files and drag them (or extract) to the c:\gistutorial folder

  17. Double click the second ZIP file (yes there was one zip file in the other)

  18. Select the three files shp, shx and dbf – These three make a shapefile Then copy or extract all three files into the c:\Gistutorial folder

  19. Start ArcMap

  20. Click the Add Data button, navigate to c:\Gistutorial click the shp file, click Add

  21. Double click the layer, then click the Symbology tab

  22. Click Categories and in the Value Field dropdown, click CFCC

  23. Click Add all values and click OK - CFCC codes are Census Feature Classification codes. The Census assigns a unique code to each type of road. Interstates are A11 and A15

  24. Right click on the line next to A11 and click Mars Red Right click on the line next to A15 and click Mars Red Right click on the line next to A41 and click 10% gray

  25. Right click the layer and click Open Attribute table, 167122 roads in sb co Close the table

  26. Click Selection, click Select By Attribute

  27. Double click “ZIPL”, click =, type in ‘92374’ In the single quotes.

  28. Click OK, and the roads in 92374 are selected

  29. Right click the layer and click Selection, and click Zoom to selected features

  30. These are the Redlands streets

  31. Use the Zoom In tool to zoom in on the campus

  32. Export just the Redlands Streets into their own shapefile

  33. Right-click the new layer and click Label features to turn the street names on
