  3. Why lower speed at 20kph ? • To lower seriousness of road accidents • To foster cordiality • To enable the users to share space in safer conditions Source : CERTU

  4. What is a home zone ? • Shared space : opened area to all transport modes, • Priority to pedestrian over all vehicles (except tramways) • Double-way for cyclists, even in a one-way street • Speed limited at 20 kph • Main rule: cordiality Source : CERTU

  5. How does a home zone look like? • The street gives the feeling to car drivers that they are driving on a pedestrian area (and not the opposite !) • There is no road sign for cyclists, except some markings on the surface Source : CERTU

  6. Examples : Suresnes, France Comfortable shared space for pedestrians (one-level street), with bollards to mark the dedicated space for only pedestrians Regulatory road sign with an additional informational sign The parking is organised according to needs of each neighbourhoods 7

Added-values of home zones for cities Fostering calming traffic policy inner-city Improvement of accessibility for all (reduced mobility person) Opportunities of rethinking the place of children in public space Enhancing the cycling network with cycling double-ways (shorter ways), with cycling in narrow streets Improvement of comfort and safety of walking/cycling buses, especially in streets with narrow pavements 8

  8. Golden rule n°1: Everybody travels on the same space at 20 kph maximum in a friendly way, taking care of users who have right or vulnerable. Golden rule n°2 : Pedestrians can walk on all the surface, without « parking ». Sometimes they have a dedicated path in addition. How to share the space in home zone ? Golden rule n°3: Cyclists can ride in both directions even in one-way street.

  9. How to share the space in home zone ? Golden rule n°5 : Home zone should be a suitable street for children to move and practice active modes. Golden rule n°4 : Car drivers only parked on marked places.
