The Asante People • Founded by the King Osei Tutu in the eighteenth century. • Priest was OkomfoAnokye, who unified the Asante states through allegiance to the Golden Stool. • Stool believed to have come from heaven. • Alliances made with surrounding peoples lead to the formation of the Ashanti Union around 1700.

  3. Location • Modern nation of Ghana (Africa) • Capital, Kumasi • In 1750 the Asante Empire was the largest and most powerful state in the region • People known as the Akan

  5. The Asante Kingdom • Osei Tutu expanded rapidly by uniting clans and using centralization to control the people. • When obtained through war he offered them to join the empire or become a tribute state. • Opoku Ware I his successor will expand the territory to what is now present day Ghana

  7. Culture • The Akan culture is widely know for its mythical stories called anansesem. • The Akan culture reached South America, Caribbean, and North America • Asante people tried to uphold their culture by refusing to allow British influence.

Rise of the Asante Empire • Ashanti was the largest and most powerful state in southern Ghana. • Osei Tutu rallies the his forces and other independent chiefdoms to defeat Denkyira. • Victory against Denkyiraleaves Ashanti the leading power of the region. • They were rich in gold. • Slave labor from Portuguese expanded gold production.

Decline of the Asante Empire • Ashanti wage war against the British. • A war party took over the government and advocated imperialism and resistance to foreigners led to the war. • At the same time Ashanti gradually ceded their autonomy to the British. • The capital Kumasi was captured by British general Sir Garnet Wolseley.

Significance of the Asante • Major exporter of slaves to the Transatlantic slave trade. • Developed a skilled bureaucracy which allowed the Asante kingdom to last as long as it did. • Longest military resistance to European colonial rule in all of West Africa. • In January 1 1902 Asante became a British protectorate.
