  3. Purpose of Lincoln Human Resource Management Association (LHRMA) • LHRMA was founded in 1953 but was once known as the Lincoln Personnel Management Association (LPMA). LHRMA became affiliated with SHRM in October of 1962. • The purpose of LHRMA is to provide for the interchange of ideas, experiences and methods concerning the relationships between management and employees, and to promote professional ethics and acquaintanceship among those involved in professional human resource management.

Membership Requirements & Dues • LHRMA memberships are calendar year memberships. • Dues are $50. • Memberships are based on the individual vs. corporate or institutional memberships. • The membership directory contains proprietary information and must not be used for solicitation purposes. It must not be disclosed, reproduced, distributed to, or used by an individual, organization or entity that is not affiliated with LHRMA without the prior express written consent of LHRMA. • To report changes to your name, title, company, phone number, etc. contact Membership Services at (402)781-2054 OR e-mail infochange@lincolnhr.org.

LHRMA Monthly Programs • Meeting Practices • Meetings are your best opportunity to network with other human resource professionals, further your human resource knowledge, and share best practices with your colleagues in the same field. This is invaluable. • Meeting information and topic information can be found on LHRMA website, LHRMA Resource Newsletter, and is sent via an e-mail notification, generally a couple weeks before the meeting registration deadline. • Meetings are normally the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

LHRMA Monthly Programs (cont’d) • Meeting Practices (cont’d) • Registration options: • E-mail reply to the e-mail meeting notification • E-mail message to lhrma0048@yahoo.com • Registration deadline is noon on the Friday before the meeting. • $5 meeting fee for late registrations OR • If you registered and did not attend and didn’t cancel before the registration deadline.

LHRMA Monthly Programs (cont’d) • Things to remember: • Meetings are for members only and not to share with co-workers if the member can’t attend. • An individual who is not a member of LHRMA may attend a monthly meeting, but MUST be accompanied by a member of LHRMA. If the guest does not know a member they may contact a board member and go as the board member’s guest. Guest may attend as a guest ONLY ONCE for the year and then should apply for membership if they wish to continue attending the meetings.

  9. Special Monthly Meeting Information February: Student Chapter sponsored meeting with UNL, Doane, and NE Wesleyan College campuses. March: Triad Meeting with the American Society of Training & Development (ASTD) the Lincoln Management Society (LMS). July: Recognition of newly certified PHR/SPHR members. September: SHRM State Conference. No regular monthly meeting. October: Staff Appreciation/Past President’s Recognition. November: Annual election of Board members, member volunteer recognition. December: Informal Holiday gathering. Several half-day LHRMA workshops are generally offered during the year in the areas of diversity, compensation and benefits or HR legal topics.

President, Cathy Maddox, PHRHuman Resources Coordinator • Responsibilities & Goals • Provide leadership to the chapter membership that is consistent with the state, area, and national SHRM policy, strategies and objectives. • Operate the chapter effectively to ensure the needs of the members are met. • Serve as a resource for the membership and for the community. • Volunteer Opportunities • There isn’t one specific thing for this position; however, there are numerous opportunities to serve on any of the committees.

  13. Past-President, Carmen Wiles, SPHRHuman Resource Manager • Responsibilities • Provides guidance and advice to the President and Board during the year when needed. • Serve on committees where needed. • Continues to support the membership and Board throughout the year.

President-Elect & Gov’t Relations ChairMark Pankoke, SPHR,Sr. Human Resource Manager • Responsibilities & Goals • Educates membership on human resource related legislation and provides opportunities to help impact legislation through letters and lobbying efforts. • Supports the President and Board members in any way possible and serves as President in his/her absence. • Provides letter writing samples and opportunities for members to write to legislators. Encourages members to actively participate in the legislative process. • Finds ways to increase membership letter writing at both the state and federal levels, selects priority bills to focus on and monitors the status, provides membership reports on legislation that is relevant to human resources, introduces the committee to the NE Senators, educates them on the steps of the bill process, and has one committee member attend the Employment Law and Legislative Conference in March.

  15. President-Elect & Gov’t Relations Chair(cont’d) • Volunteer Opportunities • Serve on committee to help prioritize, and monitor state and federal legislation, help educate members on the legislative process, and provide legislative resource materials for interested membership.

Program Chair, Judy GanoungFiscal and HR Director • Responsibilities & Goals • Provide interesting topics and speakers on the most current Human Resource information for the monthly chapter meetings. • Orchestrate the meeting sites and menus. • Facilitate the Programs Committee meetings to provide diverse input to help plan future LHRMA meetings. • Volunteer Opportunities • Serve on the Program Committee to help provide topic and speaker ideas for the meetings and workshops, help make the meeting arrangements, and assist in any way with the program delivery.

Treasurer & Registration Chair, Cindy Mefford, PHRDirector, Human Resources • Responsibilities & Goals • Keeps accurate account of the monthly expenses to ensure proper billing. • Provides an annual report of monthly meeting attendance & expenses. • Provides a monthly treasurer report to the board • Maintains an accurate registration list for each of the meetings and workshops. • Ensures that meeting registration goes quickly and smoothly. • Volunteer Opportunities • Help at the monthly meeting registration table.

Membership Chair,Lin Blodgett, XMBAHuman Resource Director • Responsibilities & Goals • Promotes LHRMA membership through current members and educates the community on LHRMA. • Welcomes and introduce new members to the membership and provides them with a warm welcome. • Provides orientation for the new members. • Promotes SHRM membership and educates members on the SHRM benefits. • Responds to membership inquiries and processes new member applications within the week.

  19. Membership Chair, (cont.) • Volunteer Opportunities • Talk to others about LHRMA memberships and invite them to attend as your guest to a monthly meeting. • Notify the Chair of possible new members. • Serve as a “new member buddy” at the new member’s first meeting.

  20. Secretary & Publicity Chair,Elly Hardekoph, PHRSenior H.R. Generalist • Responsibilities & Goals • Take and record minutes at the monthly board meetings. • Gather articles, and format the monthly newsletter and submit to publishers for print. • Publicize LHRMA events in the LHRMA Resource and in the local media. • Provide a high-quality, well-designed and timely newsletter. • Record accurate and complete minutes of the board meetings. • Publicize more LHRMA events in the local print media. • Volunteer Opportunities • Provide articles for the newsletter. • Take pictures of LHRMA events.

Diversity Chair, Barb Benes, PHRHRIS Analyst • Responsibilities & Goals • Make a significant effort to recruit diverse members in the HR community to become LHRMA members. • Partner with the Chamber of Commerce and other local entities to establish a network for local diversity recruiting. • Raises awareness, understanding, and provides education to the membership on diversity. • As a committee, monitors local and regional diversity issues and programs, and hold one diversity workshop, annually. • Volunteer Opportunities • Serve on the diversity committee to help raise awareness and understanding of the membership on diversity. • Help recruit diverse membership • Help provide articles for the diversity column.

Workforce Readiness Chair,Julie Singh,PHR HR Coordinator • Responsibilities & Goals • Serves as a resource for the SHRM Student Chapters at the area colleges, high schools, and Junior Achievement. • Stays in contact with the SHRM student chapters and encourage the chapter presidents to attend the LHRMA monthly meetings. • Upon request helps the student chapters obtain speakers for their meetings and assist with the student sponsored LHRMA meeting held in February. • Monitors and evaluates LHRMA activities concerning education issues and encourage chapter involvement with our student chapters.

Workforce Readiness Chair (cont’d) • Volunteer Opportunities • Serve on the Workforce Readiness Committee • Assist students with job shadowing, resume critiquing, and mock interviews. • Provide company internship information and/or company tours. • Serve as a judge for the Junior Achievement mock interview event.

SHRM Foundation RepresentativeRuss Roberts,Human Resources Director • Responsibilities & Goals • Raises awareness among LHRMA professionals as to the services and support provided by our national professional association, SHRM. • Conducts fund raising activities semi-annually within the membership to help financially support SHRM. One project will be to gather “goody baskets” from member companies for LHRMA professionals can either bid or receive as a drawing prize. • Volunteer Opportunities • Assist with the fundraising activities in conjunction with a LHRMA event/meeting.

What is SHRM? • The Society for Human Resource Management is the leading voice of the human resource profession, representing the interests of more than 233,000 professional and student members. LHRMA encourages its members to join SHRM, but a SHRM membership is not required to be a LHRMA member.

SHRM Membership Benefits • A Voice in Washington - representation, membership involvement, direction and legislative updates. • Information Resources - information center, white papers, and sample forms & toolkits. • Publications – HR Magazine, HR Week, SHRM Legal Report, Mosaics, and Research Reports. • Professional Development – annual conference, seminars, legislative converence and legal update, SHRM Learning System, Self-Study Products, books & videos, HR Salary Surveys, and the SHRM Academy.

  27. How do I become a SHRM member? • Yearly dues - $160. SHRM offers a $15 discount to first time members or members who rejoin after a year’s lapse which makes it a $145 joining fee. LHRMA offers an additional discount of $25 to help promote SHRM which makes it a $120 membership. • Each year LHRMA holds a special SHRM Membership Drive for only $99. This is available from 2/1/08 till 4/30/08. Contact Membership for more information. • Applications are available from the SHRM website at www.shrm.org or from the LHRMA website at www.lincolnhr.org or from the Membership Chair. Mail SHRM application to LHRMA Membership Chair.

  28. Human Resource Certification Institute-- HRCI A designation distinguishes you among management and peers, and shows your commitment to the human resource profession. In addition, these valuable credentials can open doors to unlimited career opportunities. The designations are: • Professional Human Resources--PHR • Senior Professional Human Resources--SPHR • Global Professional Human Resources--GPHR • LHRMA offers a PHR/SPHR Certification Prep Course • Uses a lecture format that encompasses the six functional areas that make up the test specifications. • Held one night per week for 3-hour sessions for 13-weeks in Spring/Fall

HRCI – Human Resource Certification Institute (cont’d) • LHRMA instructors, who are certified practitioners in Human Resources provide both practical and technical expertise to participants. • Each participant gets a certification guide. • Each participant needs the text, “Human Resource. Management” 10th Edition, plus the study guide. • Enrollment Fee - $25 LHRMA Members, $35 non-LHRMA members. • There has been a 95% success rate of passing the exam for those who participated in the study group. • More information about the exam or eligibility can be accessed online at www.hrci.org.

Human Resource Scholarships • UNL Scholarship - In conjunction with the College of Business at UNL and the Student Chapter Advisor, we award a student the Richard Bourne Scholarship for $500. • NE Wesleyan University Scholarship - In conjunction with the College of Business Administration and Economics at NWU and the Student Chapter Advisor, we award a student the Dr. LaVerne C. Rudell Scholarship for $500. • Doane College Scholarship - In conjunction with the Doane College Director of Financial Aid we award a student with the M. David Osterhout Human Relations Scholarship for $500.

  31. LHRMA Code of Ethics As a member of the Lincoln Human Resource Management Association, an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management, I recognize and accept the responsibility incumbent upon me as a member of the Human Resource Profession. I pledge myself to observe, practice, and maintain ethical practices of the profession.
