  1. Infographics brought to you by: WHAT YOU NEED TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED TO LEARN ABOUT NIGHT VISION NIGHT VISION DEVICES DEVICES What is night vision? Night vision is a technology mainly applied to optical devices. It refers to the ability to see in very low light situations. During the the second world war, night vision was used by soldiers during the night or when entering a pitch black room. Night vision basically works by collecting non visible light such as infrared and ultraviolet light and enhances it into monochromatic images. Modern night vision devices now include thermal imaging, image intensifiers and other modern technologies to improve visuals. DEVICES Night vision devices can be categorized in three types each designed for a particular use depending on the purpose. GOGGLES CAMERAS SCOPES Scopes are monocular or with one eyepiece to look through. It can be handheld or mounted on a weapon or a tripod. These are useful for hunting, observation, outdoor exploration or to simply work your way through a dark path. Goggles are also hand held but can be worn on the head for hands-free operation. These are larger by comparison with a scope and are binocular or with two eyepieces for both eyes. Used by military and law enforcement applications as well as hunting or exploration. Night vision technology can be built-in to video recorders. These devices allows distant viewing and recording for the user. Commonly used for CCTV surveillance, vehicular navigation (i.e. cars, boats and airplanes) and remote exploration. THE IMAGE INTENSIFIER TUBE Photocathode is a light sensitive surface that captures photons and turns it into electrons. 2 Phosphor Screen Takes the multiplied electrons and turns it back to identifiable photons. 4 Objective Lens Photons (light particles) enters the objective lens. 1 Photo multiplier / Microchannel Plate Processes the electrons and passes it through a series of plates and multiplies them further. 3 Inside a night vision device is the image intensifier tube. This is a vacuum tube responsible for intensifying the available light so that it can be visible to the user. It works by converting light particles called photons into electrons, multiplies it, converts it back to amplified photons and projects it to the viewfinder. Initially used by the military during WWII and has been further improved. Advances on the technology have been denoted as generations 0 through 4.
