  1. Night Vision Goggles CW3 Genaro Rodriguez

  2. Objective Develop Student Instructor Pilot’s Understanding of the Night Vision Goggles and it’s Associated Limitations.

  3. NVG General Description / Operational Considerations • Passive Light Amplification / Intensification System that Intensifies Light 2000-3500 Times • Best Visual Acuity Attainable is 20/25 - 20/40 • ANVIS Will Not Correct for Astigmatism • ANVIS Will Not Magnify • Distance Estimation & Depth perception Is Reduced. • Power Pack - AAs or Lithium

  4. NVG General Description / Operational Considerations (Cont.) • 40° Field of View • Focal Range - 11 in. to Infinity > 108 ft. • Weight 19.4 - 20.8 Ounces • Breakaway Capability • Frequency Sensitivity Extends Well Into Near IR • Minus Blue Coating Makes Them Less Sensitive to Blue Lighting • Monochromatic

  5. Adjustment Techniques • Optimal Sight Adjustment Point (OSAP) • Vertical Adjustment • Fore & Aft and Eye Span Adjustment • Tilt (adjusted in the aircraft) • Focus Adjustment Procedures

  6. Unacceptable Tube Defects Shading Edgeglow Flashing, Flickering or Intermittent Operation

  7. Acceptable Tube Defects (Cosmetic Blemishes) Bright Spots Emission Points Black Spots Fixed Pattern Noise (Honeycomb) Chicken Wire Image Disparity Image Distortion Output Brightness Variation

  8. Effects of Light NVGs Can Detect Light Sources Not Visible to the Unaided Eye Performance is Directly Related to Ambient Light Levels Adversely Affected by Bright Lights and Periods of High Ambient Light

  9. Weather Considerations NVGs Can See Through Obscurations Such as Fog, Rain, Haze, Dust and Certain Types of Smoke Halo Effect Increasing Video Noise Decreasing Visual Acuity

  10. WARNING The visual range of NVGs may not allow aviators enough time to avoid obstacles. Therefore, aviators must exercise extreme care when using the devises during terrain flight modes. Aviators should reduce ground speed so that they can detect and avoid obstacles when ambient light levels are low or visibility is poor because of weather conditions. Ground Speed Limitations 0 - 25 ft AHO 40 kias 25 - 80 ft AHO 70 kias > 80 ft AHO Vne
