  2. Design Process • Define the Problem Design a float model for our client that will appropriately convey the mission and purpose of the business while showing the underlying commitment the business has for the community.

Dear Business Leader, • Sept. 15, 2012 • Dear Lancaster Business Leader, • I am the 7th grade STEM teacher at Discovery School in Lancaster.  At Discovery, we emphasize STEM instruction, and I would like to offer a partnership with my amazing STEM students. We would like to design and create a model float for your business for possible production and placement in the Lancaster Christmas Parade! • What I propose: • You or a representative from your business would meet with our students as clients.  The students would learn about your business and discuss the mission that makes yours a successful company.  With this relationship, I would like the students to get a feeling for your company so that they could appropriately represent the spirit and vision of your business in a float model. • The students will use what they have learned in their engineering classes and work through the design process to create a small scale model of a float that the client could use as a design for a potential float entry. The students will be building with robotic equipment, and will have some elements of mechanical animation in their design. For example, if it is an auto body business, the students may have moving cars on their float design. It would be ideal for the float design to go on to production.  However, it would be up to the client to make that decision for their business. • The idea is that it gives the student a real life project with which to get passionate about engineering. Collaborating with community members will help enhance their communication skills and give their applied skills a foundation with meaning. • What you would be committing to: • You would be asked to meet with a small group of students either in person, or via Skype to discuss ideas and develop a plan.  You should be available for questions as needed either via email or telephone, and be willing to meet one final time for the student presentation of the model. That’s all! • Due to time considerations, I would like to see this endeavor begin as soon as possible.  Please forward this to any business leaders you think may be interested in this proposal. • Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
