History • Earliest evidence of the game started in the 15th century in Malaysia. • In Philippines the sport was called Sipa. • By the 1940’s the game had spread across southeast Asia. • “Sepak” is the Malaysian word for kick and “takraw” is the Thai word for woven ball. • Literal translation ~ Kick Ball
Competition • International play is governed by ISTAF, the International SepakTakraw Federation. • The Kings World Cup is held every year in Thailand. • The game is also a regular sporting event in the Asian Games.
Rules and Regulations Rules ~ • Teams consist of three members. • Start of play begins with a “service”. • There is a referee who may call faults or award points based on the scoring system. Regulations ~ • Indoor play is on a floor, similar to volleyball. • The net is similar to that of a volleyball net. • Teams must use the SepakTakraw ball for play. “Service” to start the game.
SepakTakraw Court Similar to a badminton double sized court and a traditional volleyball court.
SepakTakraw Ball The SepakTakraw ball is constructed to have 12 holes and 20 intersections. The ball measures must have a weight of 170-180 grams. The ball may be one color, multi-color, or luminous.
