4. Dramatic Irony There’s a contradiction between what a character thinks and what the reader or audience knows to be true. • When the audience knows the killer is in the closet, but the character does not • In Mean Girls when Lindsay Lohan’s character gives Regina protein bars to make her thinner, but they’re actually making her fat Character’s Knowledge ≠ Your Knowledge

5. Situational Irony– think plot twists! An event occurs that directly contradicts the expectations of the characters, the reader, or the audience. • When Harry turns out to be a horcrux • Romeo trying to bring peace between the two families actually brings about their demise • In “The Necklace” when the main character finds out the necklace she lost was a fake Expectations ≠ Reality
