  2. What is the Long Jump? • The Long Jump is a track and field event that requires one to jump for distance rather than height. • The purpose of the long jump is to run down the runway and jump off a board as far as you can into a pit of sand.

  3. Basic Steps to Long Jumping • Step 1. The judge calls you up. • Step 2. Prepare mentally for your jump at your marked spot. • Step 3. Begin running building up speed down the runway.

  4. Basic Steps Cont. • Step 4. As you approach the board you gather all your speed and strength and jump. • Step 5. While in the air hold your feet up as long as you can until you land. • Step 6. As you land, kick feet out in front of you bringing your arms forward as well in order to land.

  5. Rules • Rule 1. You can only have one start mark on the runway. • Rule 2. You only get six jumps and you cannot retake them. • Rule 3. If you jump past the board your jump does not count, your foot must be on the board or behind it for it to count. • Rule 4. The judge measures the closest part of your landing from the board.
