Hearing • Soundwaves can travelthroughsolids, liquids, and gases. • Whenthewavesenteryourear, theystimulatenervecellsdeepwithinyourear.
Hearing • Messages are senttoyourbrain. • Whenthesoundreachesthehearingarea of thecortex, itresponds and youhear a sound.
ThreeParts of TheEar: • Theouterear • Themiddleear • Theinnerear
TheOuterEar • Youroutereartakesthesoundwaves and sendsthemdowntheear canal tothemiddleear.
TheMiddleEar • Thesoundwaves cause theeardrumtovibrateliketheskin of a musical drumwhenyoutapit. • Thesevibrationsthenmovethroughthreetinybonescalledthehammer, anvil, and stirrup.
TheInnerEar • Thecochlea (KOH klee uh) is a fluid-filledstructureshapedlike a snail’sshell. • Whenthestirrupvibrates, fluid in thecochleabeginstovibrate.
TheInnerEar • Thesevibrationsbendhaircells in thechoclea by a nerve and sendstheinformationtothebrain. • Dependingonhowthenerveendings are stimulated, youhear a differenttype of sound.
Balance • Structures in yourinnerearalso control yourbody´s balance. • Structurescalledcristaeampullaris(KRIHS tee. Am pyew LEER ihs), and themaculae(MA kyah, lee), sensedifferenttypes of bodymovement. • Bothstructurescontaintinyhaircells.
Balance • As yourbodymoves, gel-like fluid surroundingthehaircellsmoves and stimulatesthenervecells at the base of thehaircells. • This produces nervesignalsthat are senttothebrain, whichreadsbodymovements. • Then, thebrainsendssignalstoskeletalmuscles, resulting in bodymovementsthatmaintain balance.
