  3. Wildlife Mitigation at Wiley Post • Mitigation efforts concentrated inside perimeter fence • Hazardous species are: • Removed • Harassed from airport • Accident occurred off-airport, about 4 miles at 3,000 feet msl

  4. Wildlife Hazard Assessments • Conducted by wildlife biologists • Types, numbers of hazardous species • Location, daily, seasonal movements • Identifies attractants: lakes, ponds, rivers, livestock, agriculture, retention ponds, dumps, parks, golf courses • Begin identifying hazard, key to mitigation strategies

  5. FAA Guidance for Airports • Advisory Circular: “Hazardous Wildlife On or Near Airports” • Airports surrounded by attractants should provide Hazard Assessment • Federally obligated airports • “Must” use standards • Grant assurances: must adhere • PWA obligated but no assessment

  6. FAA Wildlife Strike Database • Populated by voluntary reports • Nearly 100,000 strike entries • Used to develop mitigation strategies • Only about 20% of known events reported to database • NTSB: Make reporting mandatory • FAA: Difficult to enforce reporting
