  3. Selective Group Intervention 5th Session Objectives: Identification of ideas related with discipline and parent authority. Identify efective and non efective discipline patterns. Identify alternative discipline strategies.

  5. Selective Group Intervention 5th Session How do I communicate basic demandings? Are there any clear rules about more important aspects? Do I have difficulty in enforcing rules? What happens when my child respects or doesn’t respect the rules? Am I satisfied in what regards my discipline role?

Selective Group Intervention Mother argues with child and makes disproportionate threats; Mother talks to child giving some orientations, without punishing or demanding his/her change of behaviour ;Mother says to child: «It´s up to your father to decide»;Mother avoids making demands in order not to have any annoyances.

REMOVE ATTENTION Do I pay attention to negative behaviours? Do I establish clear rules and consequences for its non fulfillment? LIMITS AND RULES Do I show my esteem/enthusiasm, When Iface an adequate behaviour? PRAISE AND REINFORCE

Selective Group Intervention 5th Session Establish limits and rules Rules • Establish reasonable rules. • Define explicit, clear, concrete and positive rules. • Establish a reasonable number of rules. • Define the rule to follow and the consequence for its non fulfilment (loss of privileges). • Do not establish rules that you can not or you do not want to enforce. • Try to establish general rules for the whole family. • Demand systematic fulfilment of established rules.

  9. Selective Group Intervention 5thSession Give attention/ ignore Giving attention to undesirable behaviour, even in a negative way ( to scold, to blame), is a way of intensifying it. Reducing undesirable behaviour: • In presence of a behaviour, pretend that you do not see it or do not listen to it; • if possible, step, physically, aside from the youngster, while he is in the same space. • Avoid eye contact; • Apply a neutral emotional tone and do not use negative verbalizations; • Pay attention to the youngster, as soon as the undesirable behaviour is interrupted. • Value positive behaviours.

Selective Group Intervention 5thSession Take privilegies/ Answer cost Loss of goods, activities or privilege valorized by the youngster because of showing an improper behaviour. • Identify undesirable behaviour. • Negotiate with the youngster costs associated to the behaviour it tries to reduce. • Select costs which have a logic relation with behaviour to diminish. • Retreat goods or privileges or interrupt pleasure activities when facing an undesirable behaviour . Examples: If homework isn’t ready, you can’t go out with, Miguel. If you do not tidy the room, Maria can’t come here for the weekend.

  11. Selective Group Intervention 5th Session Punishment/Correction Attributing a negative consequence facing the exhibition of an improper behaviour. !Secondary Efects! It can be necessary in risky situation for himself and for others. Signalize the negative value and behaviour reproof.

To chose a consequence with negative value for the young and with a proportional weight. • To do an unpleasant or boring activity. • 2. To do a previous warning about consequences to apply in presence of forbidden behaviour and the reason for its forbidding. • 3. To apply a consequence by one adult emotionally and behaviourally controlled (not angry, irritated or decontrolled). • 4. To accompany the application of the consequence by a clear verbalization about the forbidden behaviour and its consequences. As you didn’take your dish from the table, you will have to put all the dishes in the dishwasher.
