  2. Body is divided into two portions: • axial - head, neck, and trunk • appendicular - limbs

  3. Body Cavities • confined spaces within body • contain internal organs • Two basic cavities: (within axial) - dorsal - ventral

  4. Dorsal Body Cavity (back or dorsal surface of body) • Subdivided into: - cranial - vertebral

  5. Body Cavities • Examples: - oral (mouth, teeth, tongue) - nasal (nose, sinuses) - orbital (eyes) - middle ear cavities (middle ear bones)

  6. Cranial Cavity • formed by skull • contains brain Vertebral Cavity • formed by vertebrae of spinal column • contains spinal cavity

  7. Ventral Body Cavity • located in ventral aspect of body • lined with serous membrane which covers organs within • inside organs are called viscera • Two principle parts: - thoracic cavity - upper - abdominopelvic cavity - lower thoracic and abdominal cavities are separated by diaphragm

  8. Thoracic Cavity (upper) • Three compartments: - two pleural (around lungs - pleura) - pericardial (covers heart - pericardium)

  9. Abdominopelvic Cavity (lower) • 2 portions: - upper - abdominal - lower - pelvic peritoneum lines cavity and covers organs within

  10. Abdominal (upper) • stomach • spleen • liver • gallbladder • pancreas • small intestine • most of large intestine

  11. Pelvic (lower) • urinary bladder • portions of the large intestine • internal organs of reproduction

  12. Abdominopelvic Regions (nine regions) • epigastric - upper middle portion • left and right hypochondriac regions - on either side of the epigastric region • umbilical region - middle portion

  13. Abdominopelvic Regions • left and right lumbar regions - on each side of the umbilical region • hypogastric region - lower middle portion • left and right iliac regions (inguinal) - on each side of the hypogastric region
