  1. Proposed Workshop: Hemoglobin Standards and Maintenance of Iron Stores in Blood Donors Blood Product Advisory Committee April 29, 2011

  2. Interest in this Topic • June, 2001: Workshop: Maintaining Iron Balance in Women Blood Donors of Child Bearing Age. • September, 2008. BPAC. Donor hemoglobin acceptance standards. • December, 2008. ACBSA. Donor hemoglobin acceptance standards. • July, 2010 . BPAC. Hemoglobin/hematocrit acceptance standards and interdonation interval in blood donors. • REDS II Donor Iron Status Evaluation Study. Cable et al. Transfusion 2011;51:511-522.

  3. Workshop Goals • Discuss donor hemoglobin standards and measurement and to determine how any change in hemoglobin standards may affect donor safety and the blood supply. • Review data on the impact of donation on iron stores, and techniques to assess iron stores in donors. • Assess measures to mitigate donor iron loss, such as iron supplementation or change in the interdonation interval. Evaluate how any such change may affect the blood supply.

  4. Topics to be Addressed • Hemoglobin standards for blood donors • Measurement of hemoglobin and iron in blood donors • Iron stores and iron deficiency in blood donors • Iron supplementation strategies for blood donors • Impact of any change in hemoglobin standards or interdonation interval on the blood supply and on blood establishment operations.
