  1. “The Christian, the Law, and Sin” Part Three (Rom. 7:14-25) November 14, 2004

  2. “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? (v. 24) Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.” (v. 25)

  3. We live our lives between two cries: • The Cry of Wretchedness • The Cry of Thanksgiving for Victory

  4. c. A.D. 55 1 Cor. 15:9 • c. A.D. 61 Ephesians 3:8 • c. A.D. 63-66 I Timothy 1:15

  5. Q: Who voices the cry of Romans 7:25? A: Those who find victory in Christ Jesus

  6. Recognize the struggle is normative of a maturing Christian. This is Paul near the end of his life; near the end of years of spiritual growth.

  7. Voice the cry of wretchedness as often as you see your wretchedness. Spiritual maturity gives one a more mature sensitivity to sin, and a more mature hatred of his sin. Isaiah was never more mature than when he cried judgment against his sin.

  8. Run to Christ and the victory He gives you in His death and by His Spirit. Here we have a reminder of our constant need of Christ’s forgiveness, cleansing and spiritual power. This perspective keeps us coming back to Christ for His grace.

  9. Summary of 7:14-25 A maturing Christian admits his/her continual struggle with sin and affirms his/her only hope is in Christ, Who will sanctify us progressively by His Spirit and perfectly in glory.

  10. Jesus, keep me near the cross,There a precious fountainFree to all, a healing streamFlows from Calvary’s mountain.

  11. In the cross, in the cross,Be my glory ever;Till my raptured soul shall findRest beyond the river.

  12. Near the cross! O Lamb of God,Bring its scenes before me;Help me walk from day to day,With its shadows o’er me. …words by Fanny Crosby

  13. Biblical Realism “The Biblical realism of Romans 7 is meant to save you from moral pride on one side and immoral hopelessness on the other.” …John Piper
