  1. Gender and VCD A study to be done in Ethiopia from dec 2009 to February 2010 with 6 NGO’s

  2. context • In general, the position of women in Ethiopia rather bad, but has not been focus on VCD programme • New NGO law bans working on gender for NGO’s receiving more than 10% of their budget from abroad • A consortium of 6 NGO’s working with 115 CBO’s and 10,000 farmers on VCD and marketing of agricultural produce • About 18% of them is a woman range between NGO’s 3-28%, range between CBO’s 0-100%

  3. Empowerment of farmers • Programme works on socio-economic empowerment of farmers through Farmer Marketing organization development and value chain development • NGO Consortium wants to realize participation of 25% by the end of 2010; but want to go beyond mere numbers • A gender VCD consultant is hired to do a study and advice on a strategy and tools

  4. Objectives of the study • To identify what prevents women from participation and playing leadership role in the FMO’s • To design gender mainstreaming strategies and tools at the FMO level to reach the expected 25% women membership and to strengthen women’s participation and leadership qualitatively;

  5. Objectives of the study (2) • To develop a practical gender mainstreaming manual for the farmers and fieldworkers; • Study the current value chain initiative (linkages) with chain actors by the six organization from gender perspective (its advantages and disadvantages to female and male) including the impact of VC development on the food security condition of females.

  6. Study will look at 4 dimensions in VCD • Gender issues in the environment around VC’s (e.g. land rights) • Gender issues in organization of farmers (who decides what) • Gender issues in relations between VC operators such as farmers and traders • Gender issues within the household (who decides what, how does this change when a VC is developed with men or women?)

  7. Foreseen follow-up • Clearer gender strategy in consortium • PME system is in place to measure results • Study will be input in Ethiopia APF learning alliance country focus
