Students/Education • Definition of Physical Education: “Physical Education is part of the total educational curriculum that contributes, primarily through movements experiences, to the total growth and development of all children.” – Pangrazi (2004) • Definition of Physically Educated Person: • HAS learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities • KNOWS the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities • DOES participate regularly in physical activity • IS physically fit • VALUES physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle- http://www.aahperd.org/naspe • Current Curriculum includes many sports and games

Research • Research • About 9 million youngsters are considered overweight in the U.S. • Obesity and health related problems in youth • Obese children tend to become obese adults • Obesity leads to other (sometimes deadly) health issues • Walking • People are most comfortable walking at about 3 miles per hour, midway between a shuffle and a speed-walk • Fat Burning • Brisk walking may provide better fat loss than non-impact exercises

  5. Your Job • Give Us a Healthy Chance • Money: 30-60 pedometers = $600-$1200(Website) • Look at other schools • Reflect on priorities • Check credible sources

  6. How, Where and Who? • Fund Raise possibilities • Cost of setting up • Curriculum • 10,000 Steps Challenge • Work on domains: psychomotor, cognitive, affective • Core subjects can be included • Extra-curricular • After school programs like Take 10 • Students / Teachers / Administrators

  7. Benefits • Healthy Children/Teachers • Convenient • Increased attendance • Increased mental state – more on task time • Less Stress

  9. What Can YOU Do? • If you consider it important to give our students the best life possible, then you need to give them a healthy chance. We need you to allocate funds for these instruments so that our students can live the lives spend so much time teaching them about!

  10. In Closing… • Benefits: • Healthy students • Increased attendance • Increased mental state – on task • Less Stress • Improved self image/perception • Fun • Self-Competition • Cost is minimal • Core curriculum inclusion (Math, Science, Reading) • ALLOCATE FUNDS
