  16. Who must be tested?

  17. Who Must Take be Tested All public school students in New Jersey, including: -General Education - Limited English Proficient (except LEP <1 Year English Version LAL) - Special Education (unless APA) - Retained Students

  18. Extra time is added to EACH individually timed part: 40 min Part = 60 min Part. Translation of passages, items, prompts, and tasks are NOT permitted. Limited English Proficient Students(Non-Spanish Speaking) • All LEP students must take the test, with ONE exception: LEP students taking English Version of test who have been in the US for less than 1 year (enrolled after 7/1/09) are EXEMPT from LAL ONLY • LEP students who are exempt from LAL still have to take the Math (ASK 3-8) and Science (ASK 4, ASK 8). • You MUSTprovide one or more of the following accommodations: • Additional time - 150% of the regular administration time. • Translate directions ONLY into the student’s native language. • Use of Word-for-Word BILINGUAL TRANSLATION Dictionary, preferably one normally used by the student as part of the instructional program. • You MUST test LEP students in roomsSEPARATE from general education students. • FORMER LEP students are NOT permitted LEP accommodations.

  19. Temporary / Emergency Section 504 Plan • Sprainedor broken arm (etc.) prior to test: prepare a temporary/emergency Section 504 Plan. • Students allowed to receive testmodifications & accommodationsdescribed in Appendix A of the Test Coordinator Manual. • Modifications & accommodations (extra time, scribe, computer, etc.) mustbe included in Section 504 Plan. • 504and SE/504 ACCOMMbubblesmust be gridded.   20. If an APA student responds to • ASK items: • the answer folder will be scored, • students’ scores will be includedin ALL school & district reports. APA Students • All Special Education students who are NOT taking the ASK 3-8 MUST take the Alternate Proficiency Assessment [APA]. • The APA is available in Mathematics, Language Arts Literacy, and Science (Grades 4, 8).

  21. APPENDIX AAcceptable Accommodations or Modifications There are 4 codes to identify test accommodations: A. Setting Accommodations • Examples: • Administering the test individually in a separate room • Seating the student near the examiner or proctor B. Scheduling Accommodations • Examples: • Reading test questions or items aloud. (Never read aloud or sign passages) • Dictate oral responses to a scribe. • Examples: • Adding time as needed • Providing frequent breaks C. Test Material Modifications • Example: • Use large-print or Braille versions D. Test Procedure Modifications

Special Populations: Large Print/Braille • Contact OPET immediately if you need LP or Braille materials. • LP & Braille materials are shipped with regular materials but in SHRINK WRAPPED KIT. • Kit includes SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS &OMITTED ITEMS LISTthatMUSTbe used. • SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONSMUST be reviewed PRIOR to testing. • LP & Braille tests MAY NOTbe the same as rest of school. THEREFORE, ONLYuse LP & Braille kit materials provided. • All responses must be TRANSCRIBEDto a REGULAR ANSWER FOLDER. Test Highlights

  23. Staff Responsibilities

  24. 4 Key Roles EVERYONE involved in testing is responsible for maintaining test security. • School Test Coordinator – Provides oversight for the test administration in school building • Chief Examiner – Administers regular and make-up tests for assigned students • Proctor – Assists the Chief Examiner in the administration of regular and make-up tests for assigned students • Hall Monitor – Maintains the integrity of the physical environment near testing sites

  25. Test Security • Security is the district and school’s responsibility. • NO district personnel may discuss, read or review the test booklets or student responses in the answer folders before, during, or after the test administration. • Absolutely NOcopying of test booklet or other secure materials. • Security breachesmay have: • Financial consequences for the school, • Professional consequences for staff, and • Disciplinary consequences for students.

  26. NO Coats, Backpacks, Books Cell Phones, MP3s or any other unauthorized electronics. NO Instructional Displays. NEVER Leave students unattended. NO Buzzers, Bells, or Non-Emergency Announcements or Interruptions. Testing Sites • Students should be well spaced, each with ample surface area. • AssignedSeating. • Goodlighting & ventilation. • Clock & chartto display remaining time. • Keep testing site doors OPENduring testing. Doors may be closed only to read directions or during breaks. • Monitors to keep hallways quiet& testing rooms undisturbed.

  29. Before Testing

  30. Chief Examiner Responsibilities • Receive student rosters, room and seating arrangements from school test coordinator. • Count all test booklets received from the STC and verify the sequence of test booklet numbers before signing the School Security Checklist. • Ensure that all required test materials and supplies have been provided by STC. • Document attendance using student roster provided by STC. • Alert STC to any corrections needed to the Pre-ID labels. • Make all necessary announcements to students concerning the test administration.

  32. List name of every student who will be testing in alphabetical order. Indicate ALL Demographic Info (Downloaded from Jinfonet) Indicate student attendance for each testing day. Enter a “1” if a student is absent. NJ ASK STUDENT ROSTER After testing, all Student Rosters returned to Coordinator. A copy is also sent to OPET.

  33. Proctor Responsibilities • Ensure that the room is arranged appropriately for testing. Rooms set up for cooperative learning should be re-arranged before testing. • Clear memories on calculators and remove instruction manuals if needed. • Assist the Chief Examiner in distributing ancillary materials (NOT TEST BOOKLETS) such as pencils, sharpener, calculators, rulers, and erasers to students. • Ensure that book bags are neither visible nor accessible to students during the test administration. Collect cell phones or other non-authorized electronic devices from students.

  34. Hall Monitor Responsibilities • Assist the STC, if necessary, in posting Class Rosters outside rooms that will be used for testing. • Assure that all testing rooms and entry and exit doors near testing sites have “Do Not Disturb” signs.

  36. DURING TESTING

  37. Chief Examiner Responsibilities • If necessary, direct students in gridding student information on answer folders. • Distribute test booklets one by one to each student. •  Maintain security during the test administration. Chief Examiners should be present in assigned rooms for the entirety of a test session. • Enforce testing time requirements and clearly display the countdown of remaining testing time. • Notify STC IMMEDIATELY of any missing test booklets and used answer folders, and keeps students in the testing room until the school coordinator releases students. • Provide all applicable test modifications and accommodations.

  38. Proctor Responsibilities • Walk around the room when students are gridding Test Booklet Number and Form version information on Answer Folders to ensure data is correctly bubbled. • Assist Chief Examiner in ensuring that each student receives only 1 test booklet. • Ensure that students break the seal only for the section that is being administered. • Answer student questions related to the test directions. • Watch for students who might make extraneous marks or do figuring on the answer folders.

  39. Examiners and Proctors MUSTbe ALERT at ALLtimes Chief Examiner & Proctor Responsibilities • Ensure that students are working in the correct test booklet section and answer folder section by observing the symbols at the top of each test booklet and answer folder page. • Refrain from coaching or providing any assistance to students other than the directions outlined in the Examiner Manual. • Be positioned at different points in the room while the test is being administered.

  40. Hall Monitor Responsibilities • Ensure that halls outside of testing rooms remain quiet. • Ensure that students and staff not involved in SPA or HSPA do not enter testing sites during the administration of the assessments. • Escort students to restrooms throughout testing, including specified breaks. • Provide temporary relief for proctors who escort students out of testing rooms for restroom breaks or emergencies.

  42. Student Provisions for Math/LAL/Science Sections Students mustbe provided with: - Math Reference Sheets - Math Manipulatives - Calculators - Blank graph, grid and/or scratch paper - Writer’s Checklist

  43. NJ ASK 7 Mathematics Reference Sheet Students in Grades 5-8 must have a Math Reference Sheet during testing. Overage may be used for instruction AFTER testing. Students in Grades 3-7 must have a Math Manipulative Sheet during testing.

  44. Calculator Requirements • Schools MUSTprovide students with calculators. • Student MAYuse own calculator. • Examiners MUSThave extra calculators. • BESTcalculator for a student to use is the calculator which the student uses every day. • ALLcalculators must have minimum acceptable functions. • REMOVEinstructional manuals & function reference sheets before testing. • Memories & programs MUSTbe cleared before & after testing.   45. Minimum Acceptable Functions • Algebraic Logic– automatically follows standard order of mathematical operations. • Memory – at least one memory cell. • ClearingMechanism. • Students do notneed graphing calculators.

  46. Additional Calculator Functions • 3rd and 4th Grade – ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide • 5th and 6th Grade – ability to manipulate fractions without converting to decimals • 7th Grade – ability to find whole number powers of real numbers • 8th Grade – ability to do powers and roots of any degree

  47. REMINDER! Calculators are NOTpermitted for ANYstudent during the short constructed response portion of ASK 3-8 (PART 1).

  48. Students MUST have a new checklist for each day of testing. Overage may be used for instruction AFTER testing.

  49. ASK 8 Science Reference Sheet Overage may be used for instruction AFTER testing.

  50. If Pre-ID Label is correct, then no additional gridding required. If it is incorrect, make corrections. If it is missing, grid everything. If there is no label, fill in all items. There are no ODP or ORP bubbles. Filling in Sending Site is the only indication of ODP or ORP.
