The Rubix Project THE THROUGH HOUSE Redefining Modern Australian Living with CLT Construction GET STARTED LET'S GO
INTRODUCTION Behind its suburban façade, The Throughhouse is a striking home that turns away from the street to embrace the hidden landscape beyond, spanning over three hectares of sloping paddock.
KEY DESIGN CONCEPTS 1 The client’s requirement: every room must have a view. Initially the design considered floor-to-ceiling glazing, but it was refined to use restrained framing instead of all-glass, to better manage comfort, budget and atmosphere. 2 3 The home uses cross-laminated timber (CLT) for its construction chosen for structural, aesthetic and sustainability reasons. A sense of openness is achieved through framed outlooks, large glazed openings, flush thresholds that blur inside/outside, and layered transitional spaces. 4
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES The main living zone is raised on a minimalist platform, defined by a rhythm of brick columns reminiscent of classical stoas but reinterpreted in a contemporary palette. 01 Along the southern edge there’s a dramatic double-height atrium: steel-clad walls, cobblestones underfoot, and trees planted directly into the slab — creating a feel more like a courtyard than a corridor. 02 Upstairs: the master suite plus three bedrooms connect via a bridge above the atrium emphasising openness and spatial connection. 03 A separate rumpus area (also in CLT) affords children privacy and future flexibility. 04
MATERIALS & SUSTAINABILITY 1 The CLT structure is exposed internally, bringing warmth and calm, and also offering good acoustic and thermal performance shielding the house from road noise. 2 CLT is described as a renewable, carbon- sequestering material, offering precision prefabrication, reduced waste, faster construction, and an airtight envelope for long-term efficiency.
MATERIALS & SUSTAINABILITY 3 The material palette plays on contrast and continuity: external materials such as steel cladding and cobblestone are drawn inside; the line between interior and exterior is intentionally blurred.
EXPERIENCE & ATMOSPHERE Although architecturally bold, the home remains soft and intimate thanks to planted courtyards, a shade sail over the outdoor dining space, and the careful articulation of volumes. The design is framed as offering more than shelter: a home that is protective, enduring, and deeply connected to its site, simultaneously enclosed from the world yet open to the landscape.
