  1. Single Factor Experimental Designs II Lawrence R. Gordon

  2. REVIEW • Two-level single factor (IV) designs: • Independent groups * • Matched groups ** • Nonequivalent groups * • Repeated measures ** • * use t-test for independent means • ** use t-test for paired means

  3. MULTIPLE LEVEL DESIGNS • Nature of IV • Quantitative • Qualitative • Each of the four 2-level designs just reviewed may be extended to “k”-levels • Independent groups • Matched groups • Nonequivalent groups • Repeated measures

  4. Multiple Level Designs EXAMPLES • Independent groups - “fun” extension • 1 = NO CAPTIONS • 2 = CORRECT CAPTIONS • But what if add? • 3 = RANDOMIZED CAPTIONS • “Reading” control? • 4 = NO CARTOON (Estimate 10 sec. wait) • Control group (but what ARE they doing?) • Help interpret results from 1 and 2?

  5. Multiple Level Designs EXAMPLES • Independent groups - “fun” extension • Matched groups - “fun” modification • 1 = NO CAPTIONS • 2 = CORRECT CAPTIONS • 3 = RANDOMIZED CAPTIONS • Match on waiting time estimates into blocks from slow to fast “time fliers”

  6. Multiple Level Designs EXAMPLE • Independent groups - “fun” extension • Matched groups - “fun” modification • Nonequivalent groups - Hecht & Proffitt (1995), “water level”

  7. Multiple Level Designs EXAMPLE • Independent groups - “fun” extension • Matched groups - “fun” modification • Nonequivalent groups - Hecht & Proffitt (1995), “water level” • Repeated measures - Mandel et al. (1995), “infants recognition of own names”

  8. ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLE-LEVEL DESIGNS • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) • In same family of tests as the t-test • In fact, t-test is a special case of ANOVA when there are only 2 levels; sometimes reported instead of t for 2-level designs • Produces the “ F-ratio” and its associated “p value” • Assumptions • Score data; normal distributions • Homogeneity of variance • Examples -- Memory Experiment 
