  1. Christmas traditions: BETHLEHEMS TO REPRESENT THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. A tradition since Francisco de Asís’s time (XIIIth century)

  2. WE PUT CHRISTMAS TREES, DECORATED WITH LIGHTS, FIGURES, ETC. AND A BIG STAR AT THE TOP OF IT.

  3. CHRISTMAS CARDS: there is a students contest every year. The winner’s card is printed the next year to be the school Christmas card to be sent to other schools, parents and teachers

  4. THE 3 WISE KINGS PARADE - 5TH JANUARY: they are believed to bring presents for children and adults at night, when everybody is sleeping…..

  5. PEACE DAY: 30TH JANUARY, ANNIVERSARY OF GANDHI’S ASSASSINATION

  6. OUR STUDENTS PREPARED THESE POSTERS TO ASK FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD

  7. SAINT BRAIS - 3rd FEBRUARY .People go to church to bless a kind of doughnut and ribbons, blue ribbons for boys, pink for girls to protect their throats.

  8. CARNIVAL: It is the introduction of Easter. It represents the enjoymnet of life and carnal pleasures PALIQUEIRO

  9. “CARROZAS”:normally they are hand made and are very time-consuming

  10. PARADES: disguised people parade in the streets making fun of different things: films, politicians, etc.

  13. Local festivals OS MAIOS In May people make ornaments and sculptures with flowers to celebratre the beginning of spring

  15. 24th June: SAINT JOHN We jump over bonfires to celebrate the “ light “ in the shortest night of the year. We eat grilled sardines or pig meat.

  24. QUEIMADA: THE BURNING OF AN ALCOHOLIC DRINK MADE OUT OF WINE

  25. BONFIRES FROM THE CASTLE AT MIDNIGHT

  26. SAN MATEO: He is the patron saint of people who can’t hear well. People go to a sanctuary in a small village, 4 kms from Monforte

  27. In the past, people used to go to church to ask the Saint for protection to their ears

  28. Nowadays people build provisional huts with a plastic or canvas roof, in case it rains

  29. They take a lot of food and drink to spend the whole day on these fiels, near the river

  30. There they cook….

  31. …they have lunch,

  32. …visit the people from other huts, dance, and some of them drink too much

  33. VENDIMA It’s the collecting of grapes to make wine

  34. We are in a famous wine area called Ribeira Sacra

  35. People had been collecting grapes in the Sacred Riverside since Roman times

  36. People collect grapes, make wine, and celebrate a party with the family and friends involved in this task

  37. Very good wines of this area are Mencía and Godello

  38. MAGOSTO: it consists of baking chestnuts to eat them as dessert

  39. Very often, chestnuts are baked on a bonfire

  40. MATANZA Matanza means the killing of pigs for food

  41. Traditionally, people in rural areas grow pigs during the summer to kill them in winter (San Martiño) in order to have meat for the rest of the year

  42. People in small villages help each other in all the jobs involved

  43. This meat can be cut into steaks and them frozen, or made into sausages…

  44. …or be salted for ham, etc

  45. Again the tradition in the villages is to gather the family and friends to help in the work and then to have lunch, and talk, sing, play cards…

  46. All the work has been worth it!!
