  2. Christmas Tree • Christmas trees can be traced back all the way back to the 16th Century in Germany. • The Christmas tree tradition was brought to the United States by German immigrants. • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is often credited with bringing the tree inside and putting decorations on it.

  3. Santa Clause Santa Clause has been around for as early as the 4th Century. A bishop originally known as Saint Nicholas was immortalized because of his generous and loving nature towards children. He threw gifts through the windows of the poor. The Dutch brought him to America where he became known as Santa Clause.

  4. Cookies For Santa Children started leaving cookies for Santa in the 1930’s The nice children leave them as a thank you while the naughty children leave them as a bribe.

  5. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer • The red-nosed reindeer was born in 1939 when a 34-year old writer for Montgomery Ward named Robert L. May was asked to invent a Christmas story. • The company gave copies of the story to customers during the holiday season as a promotion for their stores.

  6. Caroling Christmas carols are said to have come from 13th century Italy where a man named St. Francis of Assisi led songs of praise. It is considered bad luck to let carolers leave empty handed. It is customary to give them baked good or money. It is also considered bad luck for carolers to sing any other time besides Christmas.

  7. Jesus This is not so much a tradition but the whole reason we have Christmas. Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary. He was sent by God to save us from our sins.
