  2. Motion Detectors How do they work?

  3. Sound it emitted from motion detectors (MD) • Very high pitch, way above what we can hear. • A clicking sound is added to tell us that MD is issuing sounds • Spread out in a cone, starting from grill of MD • When sound hits an object, some is bounced back to MD

  4. The rest of the story • Sound travels very fast, but is constant at a certain temp. (346 m/s at room temp) • Computer calculated displacement by the computer using v = d/t, calculation done very fast. • Sounds are continually emitted, many times per second. Information about displacement is continually recorded

  6. Questions About the Motion detector • What is the point of reference? (where is zero on the graph) • Relative to the motion detector, which way do you move in order to travel in the positive direction?
