  1. Definition of Animation History of Animation Popular Techniques of Animation Home

  2. What is Animation? >rapid display of a sequence of static images and/or objects to create an illusion of movement >production of moving images by computer techniques , or the image produce

  3. History of Animation >magic lantern= 1671; lantern makes oil paintings appear much larger, and puppeteers can move them to create images >The zoetrope is a spinning disc featuring different frames of movement that

  4. display a complete animation cycle when spun fast. >celluloid=1913; complex background and foreground; animation is easier >Walt Disney= first animator to add sound in movie (Steamboat Willie= 1928)

  5. Techniques of Animation

  6. Traditional Animation(cel or hand animation) >The individual frames are photographs of drawings that are first drawn on paper. To create the illusion of movement, each drawing differs slightly from the one before it. The animator’s

  7. drawings are traced onto transparent acetate sheets called cels. The completed character cels are photographed one-by-one against a painted background by a rostrum camera. >examples:

  8. Stop motion Animation >animation created by physical manipulating real-world objects and photographing them one frame of film at a time >examples: clay animation, cutout animation, model animation, object animation, pixilation

  9. Computer Animation >animation is created digitally on a computer; takes less time to produce >2D animation= figures are created and/or edited on a computer using 2D bitmap graphics or 2D vector graphics

  10. >2D terms= techniques that gives the animators control over the final product >3D techniques= build virtual worlds where characters and objects move and interact >3D animation= can create images that seem real to the viewer

  11. Mechanical Animation >animatronics= use of mechatronics to create machines (seem animate rather than robotic) >chuckimation=created by makers of cartoon; characters/props are chucked from off camera to simulate talking by unseen hands

  12. >puppetry= performance animation that involves manipulation of puppets; most involves storytelling >zeotrope (active turn)= device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures
