  1. Old v. New Defining Our Covenant Relationship with God

  2. Old Covenant Stipulations An Overview

  3. Old Covenant • Found in Deuteronomy: A Treaty • 613 Laws: Moral, Civic, Ceremonial (a.k.a. Sacrificial, Priestly); 10 Main Commandments Summarize All; 2 Summarize 10. • Leviticus & Numbers Summarize Ceremonial

  4. Old Covenant Cont… • Sacrifices had to be offered according to Ways and Days as only a “covering” for sin. • Rituals, Tithes and Offerings had to be performed/made in order to be considered a citizen in harmony with the Theocracy — not only a matter of faith but also a matter of duty (ex. taxes with a sacred obligation).

  5. Old Covenant Cont… • Civic laws included personal hygiene & cleanliness, dress, conducting sales & contracts & business, crime, land ownership and maintenance, servant treatment, debt forgiveness, etc. The moral laws informed the civic.

  6. Old Covenant Pro’s

  7. Old Covenant Pro’s • You would know what God expects, right from wrong. • Theocracy means a God-ruled system: the laws and society are from God Himself.

  8. Old Covenant Pro’s • Sin and Crime are dealt with all at once (by priestly and civic procedures mixed together). • Get to see illustrations of God and the coming Messiah all the time at the Temple arrangement and implements, in worship, by the appointed times, in the clothing of priests, in customs.

  9. Old Covenant con’s

  10. Old Covenant Con’s • Memorizing & Learning the Torah (5 Books of Moses — all 613 commands) by age 13. • The Law constantly makes you aware of sin and how to sin. Sin, not freedom from it, is the measure by which you are judged: condemnation, desiring but not finding transformation.

  11. Old Covenant con’s, Cont… • Keeping track of your sins until the day of sacrifice, when you could have them “covered” in God’s eyes. • Severe penalties compared to our culture: ex. death for being a rebellious child

  12. Old Covenant con’s, Cont… • Had to be Hebrew or join the Hebrew Nation. • Knowing that God Himself said the Israelites would betray the Covenant. (Deut. 17:14) • The Law is weak, because it cannot take away sin from your human nature. (Romans 8:3)

  13. New Covenant Stipulations An Overview

  14. New Covenant • Found in Jeremiah 31:31 • Promised to Jews of the Old Covenant, who knew they had failed the Old Covenant • Available to Gentiles (Non-Jews) Also

  15. New Covenant, Cont…
