  9. He leased 40,000 acres to train a secret army, in case of Spanish invasion • He was going to claim land for himself, with his 40 (armed) farmers • He was arrested February 19, 1807 on charges of treason

  10. Abolition • In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson abolished slave trade between the states • In 1808, Jefferson would later abolish international slave trade between the U.S.A. and other countries • This was thought by many historians to be his greatest accomplishment as president

  11. Jefferson’s Demise • June, 1826- Jefferson is confined to bed • He contracted Urea, severe Diarrhea and Pneumonia • July 4, 1826 Jefferson dies

  12. Irony • Jefferson dies on the 15th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence • He died a few hours before his rival John Adams did
